Description

Asunn s. BABBIT,
, anni ,eine
or Knnsnvinnn, nnvonnnr a oo., or SAME rnacn. f
New YORK, Assrenon rro nasprr,
Letters Patent No. 111,165, dated January 24, 1871; antedated January'lll, 1871;
lMPRovMENi-IN EA'RTi-ifscRAPERs.
The Schedule referred to in these Lett-:eri: Patent: anvmakz'hg pari: of the same.
To allV whom it may concern Beit known that I, ASHER S. RABBIT, ot Keeseville, in the county of Essex and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin- Road-Scraper; and I 'do' hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of yreference marked thereon.
This invention h as for its object the `production of a machine of simpleonstructiou for scraping and grading purposes, which shall be capable of taking up, carrying, and dumping the dirt, and consists in lcertain details of construction, which will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing- Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved scraper, and
Figure 2, a side elevation of the same.
lo enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its ,construction and manner of operation.
A represents the axle of the machine,'consisting simply of a straight shaft, a, which is carried by the wheels a c', as shown.
B vrepresents the draft-pole, which is `directly se- 'cnred to the axle A at its vrear end, and is furtherattached, also, by means of the brace-rods .b b, as shown. To this pole is suitably attached the evener, in the usual manner..
' C represents the scraper proper, which consists of the base-board c, with cuttingedge c?, and sides and back c2. It is also provided with a handle, c, the holding-bar c4, and ears c5 c5, by means of which latter itis secured to the aide, as shown.
D represents a bent lever, which has its fulcrum upon the rear end of the pole B. It is provided with a rearwardly-'extending arm, d, which is sufficient-ly long to engage with the projections upon the holdingbar c, when it is desired to secure the scraper in any fixed position. i
d representsa bearing-plate, having its rear edge curved to correspond with the forward end of the lever D.
The operation is as follows:
When it is desired to scrape up' the earth, the rear end of the scraper is tilted up by means of its han-` 'dle until its` edge engages'with the earth. rlhe movement ofthe team now causes it to cnt into and take up the soil, which is necessarily forced into its rear part. For the purpose of preventing the pressure occasioned by the resistance of the .earth from causing the scraper to revolve completely, and thus discharge its contents, the holding-bar c* is providedwith a projection, x, against which the end of the arm dV rests when the scraper is at work.
When a sufficient quantity. of earth has been taken up to make a load, the rear end ofthe scraper is forced down, and the end of the arm d, by moving the lever D, is cansed'to rest in the recess :t1 in the upper part of the holding-bar c4. The load by this means is securely held, andfmay be transported to any desired point. By simply disconnecting the 1e-. ver from the holding-bar, the scraper will be permitted to revolve and deposit its contents.
When it is desired to use the scraper' for grading ven ground may be readly'leveled and made smooth.
The peculiar' construction o'f the holding-bar is especially desirable, as it permits the arm of the lever to be adjusted for the diierent operations by simple and easy movements. The bearing-'plate servesvto prevent the lever'from becoming accidentally displaced.
- Havingthns'fnlly described my invention,
That I claim as new, and desire to secureA by Letters Patent, is
l. 'lhe lever D, provided with the arm d, in combination with the bearing-plate d' and holding-bar o, as and for the purpose described..
2. 'lhe scraper described, consisting of the axle A, pole B, scraper G, with holding-bar c", and lever D, with arm d, when constructed and arranged asdescribed, for the purposeset forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 21st day of April, 1870.
ASHER S.'BABBIT. 'Witnesses:
vS. J. Noyes, EDM.' F. BROWN.
