Be itknown that I, ERNEST C. Bownns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pawland-Ratchet Mechanism, ofwhich the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in pawl and ratchet mechanism. My improvements are partlcnlarly designedfor use in railway track drills such as are shown in Patent No. 1,073,322 1ssued September16, 1913, onthe application of Eugene Cook and this applicant filed Octoher 8, 1912, Ser. No. 724,515, and 1s a mod fication and improvement upon the structure there illustrated.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide in. a pawl and ratchet mechanism, an improved feed mechanism whereby the feed may be varied, which 1s quickly and easily adjusted and veryf simplein structure. Second, to PPOYlClB in a pawl and ratchet mechanism, an improved feed mechanism in which the parts are simple and easily assembled and not likely to become disarranged in use.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description-to follow, I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a side elevation of a structure embodying the features of my invent1on, 1t being shown in operative relation to a rail, no attempt, however, being made to show the rail in its proper proportions. Fig. TI is a detail vertical transverse section on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Flg. I showing details of the feed mechanism.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts in both views.
Referring to the drawing, the frame 1 comprises side members and cross members, there being a pair of rear spaced cross members 3. The frame 1 is provided with a base 5. frame. The standard or upright is held in its erected position by the jointed brace 8. The rail hooks 9 are pivoted to therearwardly projecting armson the lower ends of the standard 6 at 10 so that when the standard is erected, stress is put upon the hooks engaged over the rail, as 11. This general arrangement of the frame standard braces and rail engaging hooks forms no part of my present invention.
The tool holder 12 is provided with a chuck 13 for the drill 14. The rear end of the tool holder has a swivel connection, not shown, with the feed scre\v. 16. The feed nut is arranged in the;housing 18 on the outer rear cross member 3. The ratchet wheel 19 is provided with a spline 20 enthe longitudinal groove 21 in the feed screw. The ratchet wheel 19 is arranged between the. rear cross members 3.;
The ratchet wheel is driven through the rock shaft 22 arranged parallel with the tool holder and feed screw. The rock shaft is provided with a rearwardly offset arm 26 on which thepawl 27 is mounted to coact wi h the ratchet wheel 19. The driving means and connections forthe tool holder and rock shaft are not shown or described in. detail as suitable means are well known in the art and these features form no part of my present invention.
To vary the feed, the pawl 27 is provided with a control member 3 1- which is pivoted to the pawl at to coact with the cam 36 on the outer rear cross member 3. The pawl 27 is provided with a stop 37 with which the control member 3 1 engages as it is raised by the cam 36, thereby holding the pawl out of engagement dnringa part of its movement when the control member is in operative position, thus securing the slow feed. When the control member is thrown out of operative position as shown by dotted lines in Fig. V, the pawl acts upon the ratchet wheel throughout its full stroke, thus securing the fast feed.
All that is necessary to be done to change the device from the slow and the fast feed is to shift the member 3% from its operative to its inoperative position. The control member is counterweighted so that it is held against the stop 37. When in inoperative position, it is swung over with its weighted end resting on the stop.
My improved feed mechanism is very a simple and economical in structure and very easily and quickly manipulated to change Having thus described my invention, what I claim is new and desire to secure by Letters 1 Patent is:
1. In a pawl and ratchet mechanism the combination with the frame of a ratchet wheel, a pawl, a rock shaft having an arm on which said pawl is'mounted, a member pivotally mounted on said pawl, a stop on said pawl coacting with said member to support it in its operation and constituting a rest to support it in its inoperative position,
and a cam, on said frame with which said member on said pawl coaots when said mem her is in operative position to hold the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet during a part of its work stroke and permitit to engage with the ratchet during another part of its work stroke, all coacting for the purpose specified. v
2. Ina pawl and ratchetmechanism the combination with the frame of a ratchet wheel, a pawl, a rock shaft having an arm on which said pawl is mounted, a member pivotally mounted on said pawl, a stop on said pawl coacting with said member, and a cam on said frame with whichsald member on said pawl. coacts when said member' is in operative position to hold the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet during a part of its work stroke and permit it to engage with the ratchet during another part of its work stroke, all coacting for the purpose specified.
3. In a pawl and ratchet mechanism, the
combination withthe frame, of a ratchet wheel, a pawl, a member-pivotally mounted on said pawl, a'stop on said pawl coacting with said member to support itin its operative position, and a cam on said frame with which said member "on said pawl coacts when in operative positionto hold the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet during a part of'its work stroke and permit it to engage with the ratchetduring another part of its work stroke, all coacting for the purpose specified.
