To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENDERSON W. SNI- mm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Caretta, in the county of McDowell and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Drilling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a drill, and more particularly to the class of rail drilling machines.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a drilling machine of this character wherein the drill bit is held and fed to the rail in a novel manner for the positive cutting of holes therein at its web.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a machine of this character wherein the chuck for the drill bit is operated from a lever which turns the said chuck in one direction for rotating the drill bit to cut the hole, the drilling machine being designed for heavy or light work.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a drilling machine of this character which is simple in construction, reliable and efiicient in operation, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture.
Vith these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a top plan view of a rail showing the drilling machine constructed in accordance with the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation' thereof. Fig. 3 is an end elevation, showing the rail in transverse sectional elevation. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings. Referring to the drawings in detail, A. designates a railway rail, in the rail of which is adapted to be bored or drilled a hole on operating the drilling machine hereinafter fully described.
The drilling machine comprises a clamping frame B which includes the spaced parallel bars 10, the cross connecting bar 1],
which is integral therewith or securely fasgage the base or tread of the rail A, while spaced from the bar llare upstanding ears 13 in which are engaged feed screws 14, the same being also engaged in the bar 11 and are held fast through the medium of lock nuts 15 thereon.
Engaged upon the feed screws 14 is a follower bar 16, the latter having dove-tailed notches 17 in its lower edge which receive gulde ribs 18 formed on the bars 11 for guid ing the follower bar in its movements. Threaded on the feed screws 14 are adjustable abutment nuts 19 which work against the follower bar 16 for adjusting it toward or away from the work.
Interposed between the follower bar 16 and the web of the rail A at the point for the formation of a hole therein is a drill chuck 20, the same having a rounded bearing terminal 21 which engages the follower bar, while in the opposite end is detachably fitted the drill bit 22, the latter being adapted to cut a hole within the web of the rail.
Formed on the chuck is a ratchet wheel 23, while loosely engaged upon the said chuck 20 at opposite sides of the wheel 23 are the limbs 24 of the forked end of a ratchet lever 25, the same carrying a spring ratchet dog or pawl 26 which is adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel 23 when the lever is swung in one direction for the turning of the chuck to rotate the bit 22 for the cutting of a hole in the work. When the lever 25 is swung in the opposite or reverse direction the spring pawl or dog 26 rides over the ratchet wheel 23 so that the drill bit 22 is held passive during such movement, thus it being seen that the drill bit is turned in one direction only for the cutting operation thereof.
For the feeding of the drill bit to the work the follower plate is adjusted by the nuts 19 against which the said plate abuts, and in this manner a positive cutting action is assured.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
