JESSE ELMER POOL, OF WE'IUMKA, OKLAHOMA.
DRILLING-MACHINE ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 19, 1913.
Pat entcd Nov. 1 8, 1913.
Serial No. 768,474.
To all coho-m. may concern Be it known that I, J nssn E. Poon, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of VVetumka, in the county of Hughes and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drilling- Machine Attachments, of which the follow ing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in attachments for drilling machines, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide an attachment which may take the place of the foot piece or bed plate now used on machine drills.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device by means of which a round object such a pipe or other similar device may be securely held.
A further object of my invention is to provide an attachment for holding small articles either round or flat securely while being drilled, while at the same time providing means for the extension of the holding means and the shifting thereof into various positions according to the shape or con tour of the material to be operated on.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application in which- Figure l is a plan view of the attachment. Fig. 2 is a section through the attachment along the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section along the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is a side view of a portion of a clamping mechanism.
In carrying out the invention, I provide a bracket having a body portion 1 of the shape shown in the drawing. This body portion has a bore 2 arranged to receive the supporting standard 3 of a drill press. The body portion 1 is slotted toward its upper part as shown at 1 and is provided with lugs 41 on each side of the slot which may be forced together by means of a screw 5 thereby securely holding the body portion 1 to the standard. As an additional clamping means, I may provide the eccentric ring 6 which is arranged to enter a slot 7 near the bottom of the body portion 1, this slot having curved walls as shown in Fig. 3. The ring 6 is provided with an arm 6 which may be shifted by means of any convenient tool inserted in the opening G so as to cause the ring 6 to grip the standard in one position and to release it in another.
On opposite sides of the body portion 1 are slots 1 arranged to receive the side members 8 of a slidable frame. The body portion is extended as shown at 1 and the slots 1. are continued through these extensions. The frame members 8 bear a cross piece 9 which forms a bearing for a screw shaft 10 which enters a threaded opening 11 in the body portion 1. The opposite end of the shaft bears a gear 12 arranged to mesh with a bevel gear 13 on a shaft l i extending transversely of the frame. A handle 15 is provided for operating the shaft 14-. Secured to the end of the frame members 8 by means of the screws 16 is a fixed portion 17 of a vise. A movable portion 19 is slidably supported on the frame members 8 which pass through the ends of the movable portion 19 as shown in Fig. 1. The movable portion 19 is provided with a threaded bore 19 ar 'anged to receive a screw shaft 20 which passes loosely through the member 17. This shaft is provided with a head or collar 21 and a handle 22 for operating the screw.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood.
The work to be drilled is designed to be clamped between the jaws 17 and 19 of the device. This may be done by turning the handle 22. The vise may be moved toward or away from the standard 3 by means of the handle 15 for it will be apparent that when the latter is turned, the screw shaft 10 will be turned through the medium of the gears 13 and Li thus moving the slidable frame in the slots 11. The attachment may be raised or lowered by unloosening the screw 5 and the clamp ti and rctightcning these members. \Vhen the screw 5 and the clamp 6 are unloosened, it may also be swung around the standard as the center.
I claim:
1. The combination with a drilling machine standard of a bracket adjustably secured to said standard, said bracket being provided with a central threaded bore and having slots parallel with said central bore, parallel frame members disposed in said slots, a cross member secured to said parallel frame members, a screw shaft arranged to pass through said bracket and to enter sald central threaded bore, a gear carried by said screw shaft, a transverse shaft rotatably mounted on said frame members, a gear on said transverse shaft arranged to mesh With said first named gear, a handle for turning said transverse shaft and a vise carried by said frame members.
2. The combination with a drilling machine standard, of a bracket having a vertical bore arranged to receive said standard and said bracket also having a circular slot disposed at right angles to the bore and in-' tersecting the latter, a ring disposed in the slot and encircling the standard, the outer edge of the ring being eccentric and an arm JESSE ELMER rooL.
