Be it known that T, GRIN BnNnnrna citizen of the United States, residing at Placerville, in the county of Eldorado, State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Carriage-Escapements for Type-Writing Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains'to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in escapements for typewriting machines and is'especially simple in construction and quick in action. The number of parts have been reduced to a minimum and the working parts may be easily and quickly adjusted.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly efiective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects T accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appearby a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings the numeral 1 indicates any suitable frame and fastened thereto T have provided a bearing carrying a pin 3 mounted upon which is a Hat lever arm 1 resting upon a pin 5 projecting outwardly from an arm 6 secured to a shaft 7. This shaft 7 is suitably mounted. in any desired manner upon the frame of the typewriting machine and is adapted to be turned by means of suitable connections with the key mechanism of the'typewriter whenever one of said keys is depressed. These connections may be of different construction as may be desired and no particular claim is made to the same, hence I do not here enter into any detailed description thereof.

member 1 I have provided a long hub hearing 9 carrying a short push pin 10 resting slidably upon a lever f. Fastened to the frame member 1 I have provided a bearing 11 slidable in which is the push pin 12 cut down as at 13 to lit the ratchet teeth 1 1. It will be noticed that the bearing 11 is slightly tapered as at 15 the purpose of this being to allow a slight rocking movement of the pin 12 so that there will be no tendency of the said pin 12 to bind in the hearing. The shaft 7 being rotated in the direction of the arrow will push the pin 12 upwardly by reason of the before described members and incidentally carry with it the bell crank 16 fastened rigidly to the pin 12 and pivotally mounted upon the bracket 16*. In doing this the point 13 will be advanced into a tooth of the ratchet and at the same time the crank arm 16 will be carried away from the ratchet. This arm 16 has jaws 17 and mounted between said aws T have provided a dog 18 pressing against which is a fiat spring 19 fastened to the crank 16. This dog 13 abuts against a notch 20 provided upon a lever arm 21 and when the said arm 16 is carried back away from the ratchet will move the lever arm 21 back away from the ratchet tooth and by reason of the action of the spring 19 will push it upwardly immediately upon the point 22 being released from the tooth of the ratchet.
On the extreme end of the arm 21 I have provided a slot 23 slidable in which is a pin 24 mounted in the jaws 25 of a bracket 26. This bracket 26 is mounted upon a bracket 27 fastened to the frame 1 by means of a machine screw 28 and is made adjustable horizontally by means of a thumb screw 29. This adjustment is made to allow for any wear upon the tip 22 and also to adjust the depth to which the said point 22 may enter the tooth of the ratchet.
To make the movement of the arm 21 more positive in its upward travel T have provided a spring 30 fastened to a bracket 31 mounted upon any convenient part of the frame. To this bracket 31 T have also fastened a rubber bumper 32 to make the action of the said lever arm noiseless.
To return the bell crank 1b-16 to its normal position as shown by the drawings 1 have provided a flat spring 33 mounted upon a bracket 3% fastened to the frame 1, the said spring bearing against the arm 16 tion.
The motive power necessary to drive the ratchet 14 in the direction of the arrow is derived from a spiral spring 35 fastened on the interior to a shaft 36 mounted in brackets 37. The outside end is fastened to a pin 38 mounted between the brackets 37. The shaft 36 has rigidly fastened thereon a gear 39 adjacent a rack 40 carried by the carriage member 41. Also rigidly fastened to the shaft 36 is a ratchet 4-2 adjacent the ratchet 14 which is turnably mounted upon the said shaft 36. This arrangement makes possible the return of the carriage to its normal starting position. The member 41 is carried back in the reverse direction of the arrow against the teeth of the gear 39 thereby rotating the gear, the shaft 36, and at the same time winding up the spring 35 but allowing the ratchet 14k to stand still because the pawl 43 pivotally mounted upon an arm 44: of the ratchet will follow over the teeth of the ratchet 42 without engaging the same. In

The bracket 27 has a slot 27 to provide for a vertical adjustment of the arm 26.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the object of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An escapement mechanism comprising a ratchet wheel suitably mounted, a bell crank fulcrumed independently of said ratchet wheel, a dog engageable by one arm of said bell crank and normally engaging said ratchet wheel, another dog connected with the other arm of said bell crank and adapted to engage said ratchet wheel with the movement of said bell crank, a push rod connected with said last named arm of said bell crank, a lever fulcrumed independently of said bell crank, said push rod resting on said lever, and means for moving said last named lever, as described.
2. An escapement mechanism comprising a ratchet wheel suitably mounted, a bell crank fulcrumed independently of said ratchet wheel, a dog engageable by one arm of said bell crank and normally engaging said ratchet wheel, another dog connected with the other arm of said bell crank and adapted to engage said ratchet wheel with the movement of said bell crank, a push rod connected with said last named arm of said bell crank, a lever fulcrumed independently of said bell crank, said push rod resting on said lever, means for moving said last named lever, such means comprising a turnable shaft, and an arm on said shaft engaging said lever to move the same with the movement of said shaft, as described.
3. An escapement mechanism comprising a ratchet wheel, a bell crank fulcrumed independently of said ratchet wheel, a spring pulled lever pivotally mounted and having a dog normally engaging said ratchet wheel, a spring pressed lever mounted in one arm of said bell crank and engaging said first named lever to move said dog out of engagement with said ratchet wheel with themovement of said bell crank, and a dog on the other arm of said bell crank adapted to engage said ratchet wheel when said bell crank moves, and means for moving said bell crank, as described.
4. An escapement mechanism comprising a ratchet wheel, a spring pulled lever fulcrumed independently of said ratchet wheel and provided with a dog normally engaging said ratchet wheel, a bell crank fulcrumed independently of said ratchet wheel, a spring pressed lever fulcrumed in one arm of said bell crank and normally engaging said first named lever whereby with the movement of said bell crank, said first named lever will be moved to disengage said dog from said ratchet wheel, and a dog on the other arm of said bell crank adapted to engage said ratchet wheel when said bell crank moves, as described.
