PAWL AND-RATCHET DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United, States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pawl-and-Ratchet Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the'accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a pawl and ratchet device and has for its object to provide means in a manner as hereinafter set forth which can be employed for acking up a wrench or brace when occasion so requires.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pawl and ratchet device for the purpose set forth which is simple in its con struction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient in its use, and operated in a convenient manner.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described in detail and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, but I reserve the right to make such structural changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing :F igure 1 is a side elevation of a pawl and ratchet device in accordance with this invention showing the adaptation thereof in connection with a wrench and a lifting device therefor. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line W-WV of Fig. 2, illustrating the pawl and ratchet device. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view of the ratchet lever.
In the accompanying drawing, the reference numeral 1 denotes a shank having the upper end thereof provided with a fixed jaw 2 having a gripping surface 3, while the lower end of said shank is reduced to provide a cylindrical stem 4 having screw threads 5, said threads being disposed the entire length of the stem 4. The shank 1 is rectangular in cross section and has the front and rear sides thereof arranged and provided with teeth 6.

justable jaw slidably mounted upon the shank 1, said jaw having parallel straps 8 embracing the shank. The straps 8 provide clearance for the shank 1 and between sald straps 1s a revoluble nut 9 which ,is-
upon the stem 4 and of a greater length Y than said stem. Fixed in the lower end of the sleeve 14 by a transverse pin 15 is a centering member 16 having the lower end thereof pointed, as at 17. The upper end of the sleeve 14 is provided with two sets of circumferentially arranged ratchet teeth 18 and 19, the teeth 18 being the reverse of the teeth 19. The sets of teeth are so arranged as to provide an annular groove 20. Mounted upon the shank 1 is a nut 21 and when occasion requires cooperates with the collar 10 for holding the jaw 7 against a piece of work. 22 denotes another centering member mounted in a socket 23 provided therefor in the upper face of the fixed jaw 2, said member cooperating with the member 16.
The reference character 24 denotes a ratchet lever having one end thereof fiattened and enlarged as at 25, and projecting from one corner of the enlarged end of the lever 24 is a curved extension 26 having its free end provided with a recess or pocket 27.
The reference character 28 indicates a pawl which extends into the recess 27 and is pivotally connected to the extension 26 by a vertically disposed pin 29 which is arranged in the extension 26 and projects through the inner end of the recess 27 as well as through the inner end of the pawl 28. Positioned within the recess 27 and bearing against the pawl 28 is a spring 30, the function of which is to normally project the hook end of the pawl 28 out of the recess 27, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The enlarged end 25 is formed with a socket 31 inwhich is positioned a pawl 32, the latter being detachably held Within the socket 31 by a set screw 33 which engages with the pawl 32, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
One side of the enlarged end 25 of the lever 24 is provided with a longitudinally extending groove 37, in which is arranged the shank 38 of a semi-circular positioning member 39. The shank 38 is retained in the groove 37 throughthe medium of a pair of cleats 40 and a retractile spring 41, one end of the latter being fixed to the shank 38, as at 42, while the other end of said spring 41 is fixed to one of the cleats 40. The member 39 is adapted to extend in the groove 20 for positioning the lever 24,
" -whereby the pawls 28 and 32 will be held in operative engagement with a set of teeth 18 or 19, according to the direction in which the sleeve 14 is to be rotated. When the pawls 28 and 32 are in engagement with the teeth 18, the lever 24 is in the position as shown in Fig. 1, but if it be desired to have the pawls 28 and 32 engagethe teeth 19 so as to shift the sleeve 14 in an opposite direction, the lever 24 is reversed so that the member 39 will be arranged below the pawls 28 and 32, and not above as shown in Fig. 1. Both pawls 28 and 32 are utilized when shifting the sleeve 34 to elevate or lower the sleeve 14 for jacking purposes. By employing the pawls 28 and 32, a double grip is had upon either set of teeth which greatly facilitates the shifting of the sleeve 14, and furthermore will prevent back rotation of the sleeve. I
From the foregoing construction and arrangement of parts, it is obvious that the pawl and ratchet device can be employed for jacking up, as illustrated, a wrench, or for extending the sleeve 14 with respect to the shank of the wrench, or for locking the elements between two objects whereby a bracing action will be obtained and the objects prevented from collapsing toward one another. It is also obvious that the device can be used solely with the operation of a jack.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
In combination a rotatable casing having its periphery provided with two annular sets of ratchet teeth, the teeth of one set being spaced from and oppositely disposed with respect to the teeth of the other set, the spacing of said sets of teeth providing an annular groove, a ratchet lever having an enlarged forward end having projecting from one corner thereof a curved extension having its free end provided with a pocket, a spring controlled pawl pivotally mounted in said pocket, said enlarged end further provided in proximity to its other corner with a socket, a pawl positioned within said socket, said pawls capable of engaging the teeth of one set simultaneously, said enlarged end formed with a longitudinally extending groove, a spring controlled shank mounted in said groove, keepers mounted upon said enlarged end for maintaining the shank in the groove, a spring connected to one of said keepers and to said shank, a semi-circular positioning member carried by said shank and capable of being mounted in said groove when the lever is in one position or reversed from said position, whereby the two pawls will be arranged in operative position with respect to a set of teeth.
