nnss GILBERT Lawson', or enamoran, mrmnn.
' snowman. mE-wnrma msx.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, JAMES GILBERT LANG- DoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Baltimore, in the State o'Maryland, have made certain new and useful Im rovements in Sectional Type-Writer Des s, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sectional typewriter desks, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a desk for a machine, and one combined with lit for holding supplies,
and the like, the latter being also capable:
such as stationery of use as a writing desk for stenographic purposes.
A further object of my invention is to provide a combined typewriters and stenographers desk of a novel form which consists of detachable sections so that the stenographers desk can be placed on one side or the other of the typewriters desk.
A further object of my invention is to provide a desk of the type described in which the various portions may serve as units for providing a number of stenographers and typewriters desks joined together so as to take up a minimum amount of space.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specication, and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which* Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a bottom view; Fig. et is a vertical section view; Fig. 5 is a plan view showing a different arrangement of parts; and Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are plan views of modified arrangements.
In carrying out my invention I provide an oblong desk or table portion for holding a typewriting machine. In Fig. 1, I have denoted this portion by the character 1. It is provided with pigeon holes 2 for the reception of papers or other articles. rThe top 3 is provided with a back rail 4 and with an end rail 5. A
The writing desk proper comprises a body portion 6 having a top 7 and being provided with a drawer 8. The stenographers Bpecmcation of Letters Patent.
Application led August 20, 1913. Serial No. 736,650.
Patented Sept. 15, 1914.
vdesk or writing desk is arranged at right angles to the typewriters desk, the two desk portions forming a unitary L-shaped structure., as clearly shown in Fig. 2. In order to secure the two desk members together I provide a retaining member 9. This consists preferably of a board which may be secured to the bottom of the frame members of the two desk portions by means of screws 10. This holds the desk portions firmly together.
The desk portion 1 is provided at one end with a deve-tailed socket formed between two lugs l1. This socket is arranged to receive a leg `12'1vhiol1 is held to the frame of the table member 1 by means of a removable bolt 13 and winged nut 14.
One end of the higher table 6 is provided with similar lugs 11X between which a le 15 yis heldby means of a bolt 16. At the opposite end of the desk member 6 is se cured a detachable leg 2O which is arranged centrally of the desk member as shown in Fig. 3. This provides three legs for the structure and thus the device will be able to set evenly on an uneven floor.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. In Fig. 2 I have shown the desk for the typewriter as being disposed on one side of that for the suppliesl or the writing desk. The position of the machine is shown in dotted lines at 17, While the typewriters chair is shown at 1S.
Now if it is desired to place the type- Writers desk 1 on the opposite side of the higher table, it is only necessary to remove the retaining board 9, the end rail 5 and the leg 12, place the desk l on the opposite side and lit the leg 12 into the socket formed by lugs 11k shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, at the opposite end of the desk section, and secure the end rail in place. The retaining board 9 is then reversed and fastened to the underside of the two desk portions. This results in the formation of a desk like that shown in Fig. 5.
It is sometimes desirable to have a writing desk on each side of the typewriter-s desk, and to this end a second desk, such as the desk 6a in Fig. 6 may be added.
It will be obvious that the idea of the sectional desk may be further carried out by the use of lower desks or tables such as those shown at 3, 3a, and 3b in Fig. 7 alternating with the higher desks or tablessuch as those shown at 6 and 6". This arrangement is especially adapted for use in chemical, biological or botanical laboratories. The lower` desk or table is at a correct height for microscopes to rest upon during research work, while the higher desks are at the right height for writing or taking notes.
It is obvious that other arrangements than those shown might be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
'I claim;
l. In a sectional typewrlter desk, a pair of table members, one of said table members being disposed below the other and being detachably secured to the other on either side thereof, said lower table member being provided with a detachable leg and a detachable end rail adapted to be placed at the opposite end of said lower table member, reversible means secured to the bottom of said table members for securing the two 'table members together and al pair of legs for one of said table members.
2. In a sectional typewriter desk, a rectangular oblong table member provided with a side and an end rail, a raised table member disposed at right angles to said first named table member, a connecting member adapted to be secured to the bottoms of both of said table members for holding them together, said yconnecting member being reversible so as to permit of attachment of the oblong member on either side of said raised table member, said oblong table member bcing provided with sockets at both ends and having a table leg arranged to enter either of said sockets, Aand a pair of legs secured to said raised table member.
