3 INVENTOR MARTIN M- KU K5 ATTORN EYS United States Patent 3,262,734 TABLE AND SEAT COMBINATION Martin M. Kuks, 1336 Columbia Ave., Grand Rapids, Mich. Fiied Apr. 30, 1965, Scr. No. 452,201 8 Claims. (Cl. 297'157) The present invention relates to these tables in which the seats are formed as a part of the construction and more particularly to an improved construction for such tables and seat combinations providing ready assembly and disassembly and including means for adjusting the position of the seat relative to the table.
Table and seat combinations in which seats are arranged on opposite sides of the table and which are formed as a single connected assembly are commonly used for picnic tables and the like as well as in schools and other institutional cafeterias. Heretofore, no means have been provided for adjusting the position of the seats relative to the table in such assemblies so that heretofore known combination table and seat assemblies could only be constructed to comfortably accommodate persons within a rather limited height range and would not accommodate full grown adults and small children at the same table.
Further, such combinations are difficult to store in the assembled form and heretofore disassembly and assembly has been a difiicult and time consuming process.
The present invention provides a table and seat combination in which the seats are arranged on opposite sides of the table and are connected to the table to form a unitary structure. Means are provided for individually adjusting the position of each seat from a lowermost position to several upper and inward-1y disposed positions. In this way the seats on either side of the table can be adjusted to comfortably support adults and small children at the same table. Further, the construction of the present invention permits ready disassembly for storage.
It is an object then of the present invention to improve table and seat combinations by providing means for adjusting the position of the seat relative to the table of such combinations.
It is another object of the present invention to increase the use of those types of table and seat combinations in which the table and seats form a unitary assembly by providing means for adjusting the seats from a lowermost position to several upper and inwardly disposed positions.
It is still another object of the present invention to improve such table and seat combinations by providing a new construction which permits ready assembly and dis assembly.
Still further objects and advantages of the present invention will readily occur to one skilled in the art to which the invention pertains upon reference to the following drawings in which like reference charactersrefer to like parts throughout the several views and in which,
FIG. 1 is a perspective end view of a preferred embodiment or" the present invention illustrating the seats in a lowermost position.
FIG. 2 is a lateral cross-sectional view of the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 1 enlarged somewhat for purposes of clarity and illustrating one of the seats in an upper adjusted position.
FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken substantially on line 3-3 of FIG. 2 and enlarged somewhat for purposes of clarity. 7
FIG. 4 is an enlarged detail fragmentary view of the structure illustrated in FIG. 2, and
FIG. 5 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken substantially on line 55 of FIG. 2.
Now referring to the drawings of the present invention is illustrated as being embodied in a picnic table or the 22 of the channel members 24 and are secured thereto and to the inner surface of the opposite larger side 26 as by welding. The channel members 24 are provided and are supported at opposite ends of the framing members 16 in a substantially vertical position and extend somewhat below the lowermost framing members 16 to form the legs for the table and seat combination. The channel members 24 are provided with a side portion 28 joining the sides 22 and 26 and the framing members 16 are spaced somewhat from the side portion 28 as shown in FIG/3 to define a slot 30. A plurality of vertically spaced rivets 32 or the like are mounted in the side portions 28 and extend into the interior of the channel members 24 adjacent'the sides 22.
The support members 12'further preferably comprise a pair of horizontally spaced substantially vertically extending tubular members 34 each having one end secured as by welding to the uppermost framing member 16.
The seat members 14 each preferably comprises an angle member 36 adapted to be slidably received in the slot 30. The angle member 36 comprises substantially normal side portions 38 and 4% The side portion 38 is of a lateral dimension less than the lateral dimension of the side portion 28 and is dimensioned to permit passage of the angle member 36 in the slot 30 between the rivets 32 and the side 26 of the channel member 24. As can best be seen in FIG. 4, the free forward edge of the side portion 38 is provided with a plurality of angularly upwardly extending slots 42 vertically spaced to coincide with the spacing of the rivets 32. A mounting plate v44 is carried in a horizontal position at the upper edge of the side portions 38 and 40. A substan tially rectangular seat portion 46 is secured adjacent 0pposite ends to a pair of the mounting plates 44 so that upon insertion of the angle members 36 into the slots 30 a pair of seat members 14 are supported by the support members 24 one on each side of the vertically extending tubular members 34.
The top member 10 preferably comprises a pair of channel members 48 and a plurality of board members 50 or the like secured in a side .by side relationship by fastening means (not shown) extending through the channel members 48. As can best be seen in FIG. 5, each of the channel members 48 is provided with a pair of spaced vertically downwardly extending tubular members 52 adapted to be received by the tubular members 34 of the support members 12.
The tubular 'members 34 are preferably bowed outwardly slightly so that they have to be forced inwardly toward each other to receive the tubular members-52. This provides a rigid supporting engagement between the support members 12 and the table top member 10. To even more securely lock the table top member 10 to the support member 12 cotter pins 54 may be provided to extend through the tubular members 34 and 52.
The seat members 14 are each adjustably supported by the channel members 24 of the support members 12. When the side portions 40 of the angle members 36 are positioned adjacent the sides 26 of the channel members 24 the free edges of the side portions 38 will be spaced sufiiciently from the rivets 32 to permit the angle members 36 to slide downwardly in the slots 30 formed by the framing members 16 until the mounting plates 44 are engaged and supported by the upper edge of the channel members 24. This is the lowermost position of the seat members 14 and is illustrated in FIG. 1. To adjust the seat members 14 upwardly the angle members 36 are moved upwardly in the channel members 24 until the several of the slots 42 coincide with the rivets 32. The angle members 36 are then moved inwardly onto the rivets 32. The number of available upper adjusted positions of the seat members 14 of course will depend upon the number of slots 42 provided on the angle members 36. It is to be noted that the particular means provided ,for adjusting the position of the seat members 14 not only permits upward adjustment but at the same time moves the seat members 14 inwardly somewhat so that they can be positioned to accommodate even small children.
It is also appment that the table and seat combination of the present invention permits ready disassembly for storage and assembly for use. The seat members 14 can be readily removed from the channel members 24. Re-
moval of the cotter pins 54 permits the table top member 10 to be lifted from the support members 12 and since the support members 12 are connected together only through the table top member 10 and the seat members ,14 the table and seat combination will be disassembled upon removal of these members for storage. The combination then can be readily assembled in a like manner when it is time for using it again. The cotter pins 54 permit the assembled table and seat combination to be moved about by using the table top member 10 as a means of lifting the table.
It is also apparent that although I have described but one embodiment of my invention many changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed by the appended claims.
I claim:
