To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN E. T. DICKIN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beatrice, in'the county of Gage and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful-Draft Appliance, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to a draft appliance for furnaces, and aims to provide a novel and improved draft appliance, whereby either a direct or indirec draft may be established.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a draft appliance of the nature indicated, whereby when an indirect draft is provided for the furnace, the same will enhance the smoke consuming qualities of the furnace and draft appliance.
It is also within the scope of the present invention,to provide a draft appliance of simple, compact and inexpensive construction, which maybe readily applied to various furnaces, and which will be simple,
serviceable and eflicient in operation.
With the foregoing and other objects in viewwhich will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described.

The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiments in the accompanying drawing, wherein :Figu re l is a longitudinal section of a furnace incorporating one form of the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating a second form or variation of the invention.
At the outset, it might be stated, that the present draft appliance is adapted to be employed in connection .with various furnaces or boilers, either of the horizontal or upright type, in order that the specific embodiments illustrated and hereinafter described, will not be taken as limitations of the use of the present appliance.
As illustrated in the drawings, each fa-rm of the invention is applied to a horimntal boilerfincluding the casing or jacket 1 and the boiler 12 inclosed therein, as usual. Between'the rear end of the boiler 2 and the rear wall of the casing or shell 1, is a deflecting partition 3, Separating the space within the casing 1, in connection with side baiiies 4: between the sides of the casing and boiler, into upper and lower auxiliary combustion chambers 5 and 6, respectively. There are openings at the forward ends of the baflies 4, which-establish communication between the auxiliary combustion chambers.
The form of the a pliance illustrated in Fig. 1, embodies a ue or pipe 7 passing through-the upper portion of the rear wall of the casing 1 and having its inner or forward end 8 communicating with the upper or secondary combustion chamber 5, a dam-- per 9\ being pivoted within the end portion 8 of the fine, and the stem 10 of the damper being preferably extended upwardly through the top of the casing 1, to be controlled by hand or mechanically. Attached to the inner or forward end portion 8 of the flue 7, is a depending supplemental fine 11, which extends downwardly through the partition or deflector 3 to the bottom or bed of the furnace, to communicate with the lower portion of the lower chamber 6.
lVhen the damper 9 is opened, a direct draft will be established from the boiler fines (not shown) to the chimney (not shown) through the fine 7 from the inner or forward end 8 thereof, a portion of the draft' passing forvardly and around the baflies 4:, into the lower auxiliary chamber 6 and thence upwardly through the supplemental fiue 11. hen the damper 9 is closed,-all of the products of combustion will be constrained to pass through the chamber 5 over the boiler, and thence around the baflies t into the lower'chamber 8 below the boiler, from which chamber 6,
the gases or products of combustion will pass upwardly through the supplemental flue 11 to the main fine 7. This creates an indirect draft, resulting in heating the products of combustion to a high temperature, whereby the combustible products will be consumed, to thereby consume the smoke, so to speak. The present appliance therefore facilitates the consumption of the smoke, especially when "an indirect draft is established, although it will be manifest that when a direct draft is provided, the heavier gases or products of combustion will descend into the lower chamber 6, wherein the combustible matter will be consumed. The advantages of the present draft device will therefore be obvious to those versed in the art, it being noted that the present device establishes a better consumption of the fuel, to increase the heating effect, or to reduce the fuel necessary for heating the furnace, tea minimum. The present device enhancing the smoke consuming qualities of the furnace, will produce a lighter smoke which is also highly desirable, in connection with the elficient combustion of the fuel.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 2, the main line '4' is disposed vertically at the rear end or back of the furnace casing 1, and is provided with a lateral or horizontal branch 8 extending through the upper portion of the back or rear end of the casing l to communicate with the upper portion of the chamber 5, a damper 9 being pivoted within the branch 3 and having an actuating stem 10' projecting through the branch 8. The lower end portion 11 of the flue 7 provides an auxiliary up draft flue, which is provided with an angular ex tension 11 engaging through the back or rear end of the casing 1 to communicate with the lower portion ot the chamber 6.
The variation illustrated in Fig. 2 operates in precisely'the same manner as the .type illustrated in Fig. 1, and described above. A description of the variation illustrated in Fig. 2', is therefore deemcdninnecessary.
The two variations illustrate how the present appliance may be varied in construction, and in its application to a furnace or boiler, it being apparent that the present device has a wide range of application, and may be readily applied to various furnaces or boilers, to the ends noted.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In combination, a boiler, a casing inclos ing the same, a partition between the rear ends of the boiler and casing and baiilcs'between the sides of the boiler and casing, the partition .and bafiles dividing the space Within the casing into upper and lower aux- 'iliary combustion chambers, there being JOHN E.
