To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, WiLLIAhlZ S. TUCKER, acitizen of the United,.Statesfresidlng at Myrtlewood, in the county of Marengo and State of Alabama, have invented new and: useful Improvements 1n Smoke-Consumers,
of which the following is aspecification. The invention has relation to smoke consuming furnaces, the purpose being to util lize the fuel so as to obtain. a maximum; amount of heat units and to prevent the; giving off of smoke, free carbon andgases.
The inventlonprovldesa furnace ofthe nature hereinbefore statedwhich will convert the products of combustioninto a gas which later is consumed and utilized as the dlrect heatlng means for raislng the temj perature of water or converting the same into steam.
The invention consistsuof the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in a the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a smoke consuming furnace embodying theinvention. Fig.1 2 is a horizonal section on theline ww of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the smoke consuming apparatus to be adapted to any make. or variety of furnace. Fig. 4: is on the line y-y of Fig.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views" {of the drawing, by the same reference characters.
Inasmuch as the invention is primarily designed for furnaces of the horizontal tubular type, it is shown in connection with a furnace of such variety. The appliance embodies a combustion chamber 1, a smoke space 2, a gas chamber 3 and a tube l through which the smoke and products of combustion pass and are heated in their travel to convert the same into a gaseous form which after leaving the chamber 3 is burned to produce the required heat. The appliance may be built in to a furnace as a part thereof or may be constructed separately in the nature of an attachment to be fitted to any style of furnace to be equipped with a smoke consuming device. The smoke and gases in their passage through the tube 4L are gasified and are at the same. time retarded, the latter resulting from theformation of the tube 4 which tapers throughout its length. It is to be understood that it is contemplated to provide a plurality of tapered tubes 4 thereby distributing the smoke andgases and providing anextendedheating surface for gasifying the same. An opening 12 is formedin the bottom of the gas chamber 3 near the vertical wall 11 and provides .anescape for any accumulation of ashes, unconsumed cinders or other particles. The opening 12 is controlled by means of a slide 13. An outlet 14 is provided for each flue 5 and constitutes a burner for consumption of the gas escaping from the chamber 3. The gas after leaving the tube 4 enters the chamber 3 and passes, out through the burner outlets l4 and is ignited and consumed in a manner Well understood. The discharge ends of the tube or tubes 4; project slightly into the gas chamber 3 beyond the wall 11 and curved downward so as to deflectcinders or other particles to the bottom of the i gas chamber where they collect to be removed from time to time through the opening 12 which is uncovered by proper adjustment of the slide 13.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have 1' j described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, Idesire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and

What I claim as new, is
1. A smoke consuming appliance comprising a shell or casing embodying a gas chaming through the combustion chamber over the fire therein and connecting at its larger end with the oppos te end portions of the smoke space and at its smaller end with the w gas chamber.
8. A smoke consuming appliance comprising a shell or casing embodying a gas chamher at one end having a burner outlet and a combustion chamber and smoke space at the opposite end, said smoke space being located above the combustion chamber and having communication therewith near the gas chamber, a cut-off for regulating the communication between the combustion chamber and smoke space and a tapered tube extending through the combustion chamber over the fire therein and connecting, at its smaller end with the gas chamber and at its larger end with the before mentioned smoked T space at the end remote from the gas chamber.

A smoke consuming appliance comprising a shell or casing having a gas chamber at one end providing a burner outlet and a damper controlled outlet for unconsumed particles and a smoke space and combustion chamber at its opposite end said smokespace being located above the combustion chamber and in communication therewith near the gas chamber, a cut-ofF for regulating the opening between the combustion and smoke space and a tapered tube extending through the combustion chamber and connected at its smaller end with the gas chamber and at its larger end with the smoke space at the end remote from thegas chamber. 7

In a smoke consuming appliance, a shell or casing embodying a gas chamber and a combustion chamber and smoke space at one side of the gas chamber with the smoke space above the combustion chamber and in communication therewith at one end, said gas chamber having a damper controlled outlet, and a tube extending through the combustion chamber over the fire therein and connecting the smoke space with the gas chamber the delivery endof such tube being deflected to cause unconsumed particles to be thrown to the bottom of the gas chamber.
