PLOM- onus, subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Ardmore, county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, and MAURICE GOLD, citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Cigar-Packag ing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to packaging devices for cigars wherein the cigars, previously to being placed within the usual cigar box, are assembled and the assembled quantitycompressed to a size to properly fit the interior of the boX before being placed therein.
The object of our invention is to provide a packaging device of this character, of novel, simple and efficient construction having provision whereby the cigars may be easily inserted into and removed from the device, whereby parts of the pressing instrumentalities may be readily operated by hand and maintained by parts of the device in the pressing position, whereby a pressing element may be operated either by hand or by power and maintained in the pressing position by parts of the device.
Our invention provides a device wherein a quantity of cigars may be pressed in a vertical direction and also in a horizontal direction, and wherein, while the cigars are being pressed in a vertical direction, they will slide between and be guided by two vertical walls having perfectly even and unobstructed faces for contacting with the cigars, and wherein, while the cigars. are being pressed in a horizontal direction, they will slide between and be guided by two horizontal walls having perfectly even and unobstructed faces for contacting with the cigars, all as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, the frame of our device is in the form of a boX comprising, generally, a front wall 2, a back wall 5 and end walls 6, suitably secured together.
Hinged to the back wall 5, at 7, is a top wall or cover 8 which is adapted to be moved from the closed position shown by full lines 111 Fig. 4; to the open position shown by dotand-dash lines in Fig. 4, and back again. Vvhen the cover 8 is in the closed position, it engages the tops of the walls 2 and 5; and the cover 8 is held in the closed position by a: bar 9 formed, on or secured to the ends of arms or levers 10 which are pivoted, at 11, to the end walls 6. The arms 10 and bar 9 are movable on the pivots 11 from the position shown by full lines to the position shown by dot-and-dash lines in Figs. 4 and 5 and back again; and when the bar 9 is moved to the full line position, it engages the top of the cover 8 and holds it closed, and the further movement of the bar 9 is stopped by its engagement with shoulders 12 formed on the end walls 6.
Arranged within the box adjacent and parallel to the end walls 6 are two pressing wall 13 which are movable toward and from each other and in parallel relation to each other. These walls 13 are guided by proj ections 1 1 fitted to slide in slots 15 formed in the front and back walls 2 and 5,.respectively. Each pressing wall 13 is also guided by a centrally-arranged projection 16 having its inner end secured to the wall 13 and extending slidably through a guide opening in a bearing 17 in the adjacent endwall 6. The projections 16 extend outwardly beyond the end walls 6 and are provided on their outer ends with heads 18 adapted to engage the bearingsl'? and limit the in ward movement of the pressing walls 13. Arranged adjacent to the outer ends of the heads 18 are the inner faces of the free ends of springarms 19, the other ends of which are secured,.at 20, to the end walls 6. The outer faces of the spring arms 19 are adapted to be engaged by projections 21 on the levers or arms 10; and the arms 10 and projections 21 are so located with respect to each other and to the pivots 11 that when the arms 10 are moved from the dot-anddash line to the full line position shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the projections 21 will slide over the outer faces of the arms '19 and thereby press them inwardly and cause them to move the projections 16 and therewith the pressing walls 13 toward each other from the full line to the dot-and-dash line position shown in Fig. 3, the heads 18 engaging. the bearings 17 and limiting the movement of the pressing walls 13.
The bottom of the box is provided with a pressing wall formed by two end parts 22 and a central part 22 constituting a pressing wall which is arranged parallel to the top wall or cover 8 and at right angles to the pressing walls 13. The ends of the bottom pressing wall rest normally in the position shown by full lines on projections 28 on bars 2% which extend transversely between the ends of the front and back walls 2 and 5, respectively, at the ends of the box and are secured to the bottoms of the walls 2, 5 and 6. The end parts 22 of the bottom walls are supported by the bars 2%, and, when the pressing wall 22 is in theposition shown by full lines, the upper faces of the parts 22 and 22 are flush with each other and present a practically continuous, even and unobstructed face over which the cigars may slide without injury thereto during the pressing operation. The ends of the central or pressing section 22 ot' the bottom wall terminate substantially in the same vertical planes with the inner faces of the end pressing walls 13 when they are in the inner position, as shown by dot-and-dash lines, and the bottom pressing wall 22 is movable in parallel relation to the top wall 8 from the full line to the dot-and-dash line position shown in Fig. 3, and back again. After the bottom pressing wall 22 has been moved to the dot-and-dash line position, the reverse movement thereof, in a direction away from the top wall 8, is prevented by two stop bars 25. These stopbars 25 extend parallel to the bottom wall 22 and are located between the projections 23 and longitudinally pivoted thereto, at 26. When it is desired that the bottom pressing wall 22 shall'rest on the projections 23, the stop bars 25 are moved on the pivots 26 to the full line position shown in Fig. 3; and, after the bottom wall 2 has been moved to the dot-and-dash line position, and it is desired to maintain it therein, the stop bars 25 are moved on the pivots 26 to the dot-and-dash line position shown in Fig. 3.
The operation of the device is as follows: The top wall 8, the bar 9 and arms 10 are moved to the dot-anddash line positions shown in Fig. e, and the pressing walls 13 and 22 are'moved to the full line position shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The quantity of cigars to be pressed into condition to it the usual cigar box are then placed within the device, resting upon the bottom wall 22 and extending longitudinally between the front and back walls 2 and 5, respectively, and between and in parallel relation to the end pressing walls 13. This being done, the cover 8 is moved by hand on the hinge 7 l l f I l i l i l i l l l l from the dot-and-dash line position to the full line position, and the levers or arms 10 and the bar 9 are moved by hand from the dct-and-dash line position to the full line position, while the cover 8 is held down upon the tops of the front and back walls 2 and respectively. The movement of the arms 10 and bar 9 to the full line position, causes the end pressing walls 13 to move toward each other to the dot-and-dash line position, thereby compressing the quantity of cigars between the end pressing walls 13. After the bar 9 has been moved to the full line position, it maintains the cover wall 8 closed, and the projections 21 of the arms or levers l0 maintain the end pressing walls 13 in the inner or dot-and-dash line position, holding the cigars compressed. The next operation is to force the bottom pressing wall from the full line to the dot-and-dash line position and toward the top wall 8 thereby compressing the quantity of cigars between the top and bottom walls 8 and 22, respectively. After the bottom wall 22 has been. moved to the dot-and-dash line position, the stop bars are moved on their pivots 26 to the dot and-dash line position and thereby maintain the wall 22 in the dot-aud-dash line position and the cigars compressed between the walls 8 and 22.
The quantity of cigars are now compressed to the size to properly fit the usual cigar box in which they are placed for the trade, and the cigars may remain in the packaging d-e 'iceuntil it is desired to transfer them to the cigar box, when the bar 9 is moved to the dot-and-dash line position to permit the raising of the cover wall 8 and the removal of the cigars from the packaging device.
The bottom pressing wall may be moved from the full line position to the dotand-dash line position, by hand or by a suitable mechanical pressing device. The latter method is, however, preferred.

In a cigar packaging device, the combi nation of a box, two pressing walls within the box and movable toward and from each other, a lever fulc-rumed at one end of the box, means operated by said lever to move one pressing wall inwardly, a lever fulcrumed at the other end of the box, means operated by the last named lever to move the other pressing wall inwardly, a bar connecting said levers, said box having a wall having one edge hinged to the body of the box and the opposite edge held in place by said bar in one-position thereof, said box having a third pressing wall opposite to the hinged wall and movable toward and from the same, and a movable stop when in one position preventing outward movement of said third pressing wall and when in another position permitting outward movement of said third pressing wall.
4:. In a cigar packaging device, the combination of a supporting structure, a pair of substantially parallel walls one of which is movable toward the other, and a pair of independently movable stops pivoted to said structure and adapted to engage the ends of said movable wall and prevent outward movement thereof.

In a cigar packaging device, the 001m bination of a supporting structure, a pair of substantially parallel walls one of which is movable toward the other, and a longitudinally pivoted stop bar parallel to said movable wall and when in one position preventing outward movement of the movable wall and when in another position permitting outward movement of the movable wall.
6. In a cigar packaging device, the combination of a supporting structure, a pair of substantially parallel end pressing walls movable toward and from each other, a lever fulcrumed at one end of the structure, means operated by said lever to move one pressing wall inwardly, a lever fulcrumed at the other end of the structure, means operated by the last named lever to move the other pressing wall inwardly, and a bar connecting said levers away from the fulcrum thereof.
7. In a cigar packaging device, the combination of a supporting structure, with a pair of substantially parallel end walls one of which is movable toward the other, and
substantially parallel top and bottom walls extending substantially at right angles to said end walls, the bottom wall having a fixed part and a partmovable,toward and from the top wall, the upper faces of said parts being substantially flush with each other in one position of the movable part and said movable end wall being movable substantially parallel to and between the top wall and the fixed part of the bottom wall.
8. In a cigar packaging device, the combination of a supporting structure, with a pair of substantially parallel end walls one of which is movable toward the other, and substantially parallel top and bottom walls extending substantially at right angles to said end walls, the top wall being movable toward and from the bottom wall, the bottom wall having a fixed part and a part movable toward and from the top wall, the upper faces of said parts being substantially flush with each other in one position of the movable part and said movable end wall being movable substantially parallel to and between the top wall and the fixed part of the bottom wall.

In a cigar packaging device, the combination of a supporting structure, with a pair of substantially parallel end walls one of which is movable toward the other, substantially parallel top and bottom walls ex: tending substantially at right angles tosaid end walls, the bottom wall having a fixed part anda part movable toward and from the top wall, the upper faces of said parts being substantially flush with each other in one position of the movable part and said movable end wall being movable substantially parallel to and between the top wall and the fixed part of the bottom wall, and means operative to move said movable end wall.
10. In a cigar packaging device, the combination of a supporting structure, with a pair of substantially parallel end walls one of which is movable toward the other, substantially parallel top and bottom walls extending substantially at right angles to said end walls, the bottom wall having a fixed part and a part movable toward and from the top wall, the upper faces of said parts being substantially flush with each other in one position of the movable part and said movable end wall being movable substantially parallel to and between the top wall and the fixed part of the bottom wall, and means operative to hold said movable part in a raised position.
11. In a cigar packaging device, the com bination of a supporting structure, with a pair of substantially parallel end Walls movable toward and from each other, and substantially parallel top and bottom walls extending substantially at right angles to said end walls, the bottom wall having two fixed end parts and a central part movable therebetween toward and from the top wall,
l and said end walls being movable substantially parallel to and between the top wall and the fixed end parts of the bottom wall.
12. In a cigar packaging device, the combination of a supporting structure compris ing a front wall, a back wall and end walls, with a top pressing wall, a bottom pressing wall, two end pressing walls located between the end walls of the supporting structure, parts projecting from the end pressing walls and through the end walls of the supporting structure, and means acting against said parts and operative to move said end pressing walls toward each other.

In a cigar packaging device, the combination of a supporting structure comprising a front wall, a back wall and end walls, with a top pressing wall, a bottom pressing wall, two end pressing walls located between the end walls of the supporting struc ture, parts projecting from the end pressing walls and through the end walls of the sup porting structure, levers arranged to act against said parts and move said end pressing walls toward each other, and means i common to said levers for operating the I same. I

In a cigar packaging device, the combination of a supporting structure comprising a front wall, a back wall and end walls, two end pressing walls located between the end walls of the supporting structure, parts projecting from the end pressing walls and through the end walls of the supporting structure, means acting against said parts and operative to move said end pressing walls toward each other, and top and bottom pressing walls one of which is movable toward and from the other and provided with means to hold it in the pressing position.
15. In a cigar packaging device, the combination of a supporting structure comprising a front wall, a back wall and end walls, with top and bottom pressing walls movable toward and from each other, two end pressing walls located between the end walls of the supporting structure, parts projecting from the end pressing walls and through the end walls of the supporting structure, and means acting against said parts and operative to move said end pressing walls toward each other.
