To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE F. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mattress-Filling Machines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to mattress filling or stuffing machines, and is in the nature of an improvement upon the construction of the machine constituting the subject-matter of Letters Patent of the United States No. 599,299, granted to me February 15, 1898, the object being to provide means in such machines cooperating with the plunger thereof for more evenly and expeditiously placing the stuffing or filling material in the mattress case or tick; and the invention consists in providing a sliding table-like member or members upon the bottom of the box containing said material which has a carrying movement with said material into the mattress or cushion being operated upon, thus in a great degree preventing the rolling up or balling of the material, and is then withdrawn therefrom into said box, all as hereinafter fully described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings forming part of this speci-v fication, Figure 1 is a sectional longitudinal elevation of the portion of a mattress-stuffing machine containing the stuffing-holding box and parts contiguous thereto having my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the plunger-frame of the machine and of one type of said movable platform, showing means for removably attaching the parts of said platform to the said plungerframe.

In the drawings, A indicates uprights or post portions of the frame of the machine, and C a rigid floor between said posts, which constitutes the bottom of the box-like structure in which the'material E is placed preparatory to forcing it into the mattress tick 01' case F, one end of which is drawn onto a tube-like projection L, which is secured to said frame parts A opposite the end of said box. B B indicate the platens or swinging cover-sections, which are hinged to the frame of the machine at e e, the same being drawn upward to uncover the top of said box for introducing the material E thereunto by ichains f f, connected thereto, and suitable mechanism acting upon sa1d chains, as de scribed in said Patent No.599,299. When said cover-sections are dropped down upon said material, they first act by gravity and finally are forced to the position shown in Fig. 1 by the action of a toggle-arm h, actuated by suit= able mechanism, as described in said Letters Patent No. 599,299, whereby the said material E is somewhat compressed within said box and held while it is moved into the tick or case F. The plunger K is constructed substantially as illustrated in .Fig. 2-that is to say, it consists of a rectangular frame adapted to slide within said box back and forth carried by a chain J, connected with suitable driving mechanism, as partly indicated in Fig. 1, said frame being connected to said chain by a clip to. On the forward end of said frame are two hook shaped arms m m, which receive a removable cross-bar K, as shown in Fig. 1, said cross-bar having several bolts or pins 0 projecting downwardly from its under side. The above-mentioned sliding table-like member or members located upon the bottom or floor O of said box are indicated by P P P, and they are connected with said cross-bar K of said plunger-frame preferably by means of a metal plate 2; on each one thereof, having a perforation to receive the free extremity of one of said bolts or pins 0, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby said table members are caused to move within said box in consonance with said plunger-frame. The purpose of providing said sliding table consisting of several longitudinal sections, as shown, is that thereby the construction is adapted for use in stuffing ticks or cases of varying widthsas, for instance, long and narrow seat-cushions and the like and mattress-cases. To adapt the said box for use with varying widths of ticks or cases, as aforesaid, one side thereof is made adjustable toward and from the opposite one, as shown and described in said Letters Patent. By the use of said movable table-section in stuffing cushions, as aforesaid, the machine is made advantageously available for cushionwork, whereas without said table to move along into the cushion-case under and with the material, which in cushions consists of a thin body as compared with that of a mattress, the machine offered but slight advantages over hand work.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- 1. In a machine for stuffing mattresses and like objects, a box, a table-like member applied to the fioor of the box in which the stuffing material is placed, and having a to-andfro movement therein coinciding with the movement of the plunger which acts upon said material, combined and operating substantially as set forth.

2. In a machine for stuffing mattresses and like objects, a box, a table-like member adjustable to differing Widths of articles to be stufied, applied to the floor of the box in which the stufiing material is placed and having a to-and-fro movement therein coinciding with that of the plunger which acts upon said material, combined and operating substantially as set forth. 1

3. In a machine for stuffing mattresses and like objects, a box, a table-like member applied to the floor of the box in which the studing material is placed, and upon which memher said material is laid, said member having a to-and fro movement in said box coinciding with that of the plunger which acts upon said material, and with said material entering the case receiving the same and retiring therefrom coincident with the backward movement of said plunger, combined and operating sub stantially as set forth.
