To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1', Gns'ravn 1*). Guns!)- STROM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Power lVlolding-Presses, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in power molding iresscs, and has for its object the provision of a press of this charac ter which shall be of simple construction and eliicient in operation.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a press embodying my invention, l ig. 2, a side elevation of said press shown partially in seetion, and Fig. 3, a vertical section taken through the operating cylinder of said press.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a suitable table 1 supported on a suitable frame or standard 2. Secured to one side of frame 2 is an upwardly extending standard 23 having a substantially U-shaped frame 4: pivoted to the upper end thereof. Frame 4 carries a lug 5 adjacent the pivotal point and a spring 6 is secured to the outer end of lug 5 and to the lower portion of standard 5 at 7, as shown. The other limb of frame l carries a pivoted catch arm 8 provided at its lower end with a nose 9 adapted to engage under the correspomling side of frame 2. Arm 8 is provided with handles 10 and a spring 11 serves to hold said arm in normal engagement with the under side of an edge of frame 2.
An operating cylinder 12 is mounted centrally on top of frame 4, said cylinder being open at the bottom and provided with an upwardly extending guide well 13 at the top. A piston 14 operates in cylinder 12 and carries a hollow threaded stem 15 extended to operate in well 13 and also to project downwardly from cylinder 12. A threaded rod 16 is adjustably mounted in stem 15 and carries at its lower end a pressure plate 17 by means of which pressure may be applied to a mold on table 1. A spring 18 is interposed between piston 14; and the top of frame -1 and serves to hold piston 14-. normally in elevated position. A three-way valve 19 is secured to the top of frame 4; and connected by means of a pipe 20 with the upper portion of cylinder 12, said valve serving as a means for supplying and exhausting compressed air to and from the upper portion of cylinder 12, as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
In use, when it is desired to apply pressure to a mold on table 1, compressed air is admitted through valve 19 to the upper portion of cylinder 12. This forces piston 14.- and consequently pressure plate 17 downwardly to apply such pressure. By adjust ing rod 16 in stem 15, pressure plate 17 may be adjusted to different heights of molds. \Vhen it is desired to relieve the pressure, three-way valve 19 is turned to exhaust cylinder '12 whereupon spring 18 will raise pressure plate 17 from contact with the mold. Then, by releasing catch arm 8, frame e'lmay be swung upwardly and rearwardly entirely out of the way, for the removal of one mold and the replacement of another. Then the parts may be readily restored to operative position by swinging frame 41- over table 1 and engaging catch arm 8 with the edge of frame 2, as explained above. During the return moven'icnt of frame 1, spring (3 will serve to yieldingly resist such movement and thus prevent shocks and jars, lug 5, besides ilurnishing a convenient anchor for one end of spring (3, also serves to limit the upward and backward swing of frame 4.
The constrlu-tion set forth will be found to be simpli and economical to build and eftieient in use, the parts not readily becoming broken or out of order and sand from the molds not readily getting into the different bearings.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without depart iug from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
