1n the United Sta tes patent for a packaging machine. Arantcd to Felipe Giroud June 1G. 1903 and numbered 890,976, mechanism was shown whereby a certain number of articles could be separated from a magazine during: successive operations of the machine and carried to mechanism whereby they were compressed into a compact bunch and scciued by an inclosing wrapper. The present invention relates to improvements on said patent. the object being to simplify said mechanism for compressing the articles and to provide a means whereby the incicsing wrapper can be applied without depending upon the articles to be wrapped as a foundation upon which to fold the wrapper.
The invention consists of a reciprocating plunger having forwardly extending plates at its forward end which serve as a carrier for the separated hunch of articles, and which take against and cause the wrapper to he folded-upon said plates during forvf'ard movement thereof between stationary wrapper folding plates and movable folders shown in said patent. The invention further consists of means for holding the articles during return movement of said forwardly extending plates. The machine is further provided with mechanism for completing the package in a manner different from that shown in said patent. I

Fixed to the frame 1 of the machine is a shaft 2 upon which is journaled a loose pulley 3 and a. driving pulley 4. Forming part of the driving pulley +1 is a gear wheel 5 which is in mesh with a larger gear wheel 6. Gear wheel 6 is secured to a shaft 7 'which is journaled in bearings 8, forming part of the frame 1. To the upper part of frame 1 is secured a table 9 upon which various operating parts of the machine are mounted. Secured to table 9 is the magazinc 10 into which the cigarettes are placed with the long axis of the cigarettes uni* formly extending transversely thereof'. The floor 11 of the magazine is inclined in order that the cigarettes, by the force of gravity, will move, or roll toward one end of the mag azine. The floor 11 forms part of a sliding carriage 12 which has reciprocating movement in guides 13. The upper side of the carriage 12 is provided with several parti tion plates 14 extending transversely thereof. These partitions are separated to a distance slightly geater than the diameter of a ciga- 25 in guides 25.

The upper folder has blades 102 similar to the blades 101, except that they are separated to a slightly greater distance, and extend down- Ward from a lframe 109. During the foldinv operation above described, the plunger 5! remains stationary, but upon the folders returning to their original or inoperative portions shown in Fig. 17, the plunger 57, is, by means of the mechanism actuated h v cam 95 moved farther forward to the position shown in Fig. 20. This forward movement of plunger 57 carries the cigarettes and wrapper forward, and at the end of said movement, the upper plate extension 58, acting through' the Wrapper, takes against the projection 50 in chamber 51, thereby moving the sliding-bar 48 away from the shoulder 49 on plate 44, resulting in release and consequent quick movement of said plate 44 Jfrom the position shown in Fig. 15 to the position shown in Fig. 20. The plunger 57 is cut away at the rear of the cigarettes, to permit said movement of plate 44, as shown at 115 in Figs. 20 and 2l. During return.movement of the plunger 57 the cigarettes will be held by the plate 44 and the'wrapper will 'be held by the cigarettes during withdrawal of the plate extensions 58 from their positions between the cigarettes and the wrapper. A packaging machine comprising .a reciprocating plunger having forwardly extending plates, the space between said plates forming a channel at the forward end of ;said plunger, means whereby articlesare brought to rest within said channel; a wrap- 1er folding channel and a receiving cham ber, a plate having transverse rnoven'ient into and out of said wrapper folding channel, a spring normally forcing said plate into said wrapper folding channel, a trigger bar adapted forr engagement with said transversely moving plate, and having a projection adapted for movement into and out of said receiving chamber; and means for actuating said transversely moving plate v. hereby it is moved out of said wrapper .folding channel and into position to be engaged and held by movement of said spring pressed trigger bar, said movement of the triggerbar causing said projection thereon to be moved intosaid receiving chamber; means for supporting a wrapper between said wrapper folding channel and the forward ends of said plate extensions of said plunger; and means for actuating' said plunger whereby vforward movement thereof causes said articles to be' vmoed forward and the forward ends of said plunger' plate extensions cause said wrapper to be forced through said wrapper folding channel. thereby causing the wrapper to be folded upon the exterior of that part of said plunger having said channel containing said articles, forward movement of said plunger also causing said articles and wrapper to be moved inl'o said receiving chamber and the .forward end of one of saidplunger plate extensions, acting through lsaid wrapper, and taking against said projection on the l trigger bar, causes movement thereof, thereinwardly extending side projections of the means for vcausing forward movement ofv tions and the extensions thereof lniving4v wrapper folding channel, is permittedgtwo 'j Limiet 7 by releasing and causing movement of said transversely moving plate at the rear of said articles; and said wrapper actuating means then ca using return movement of said plunger, said transverse plate serving to hold said articles and wrapper during movement of said plunger plate extensionsclear of said articles and wrapper.

A packaging machine comprising a reciprocating plunger having forwardly exL tending plates, the space between said plates forming a channel at the forward end of said plunger, a wrapper folding channel, a plate having transverse movement into and outl of said wrapper folding channel, a spring normally forcing said plate into said wrapper folding channel, and a trip mechanism coperating with said transversely Vmoving plate; a second plunger having reciprocating movements at right angles to those of the first named plunger, and a pivoted lever actuated by said second plunger; means for supporting articles between said second plunger and said channel at the ,fori
ward end of the first named pliuiger andl means for actuating said plungers, whereby forward movement of the second plunger moves said articles forward to rest within said channel at the forward end of the @rst named plunger, said forward movement of the second plunger also causing said lever to move said transversely moving plate out of said wrapper folding channel thereby causing said trip mechanism to be set; means for supporting a wrapper between said wrapper ,folding channel and the forward ends of said pla-te extensions of the first named plunger; said plunger actuating` means then causing forward movement of theA rs't named lunger, whereby said articles are moved orward and the forward ends of said plunger late extensions cause said wrapper to be olded through said wrapper folding channel, whereby -the wrapper is folded upon the exterior of that part of said plunger having said channel containing said artices; said plunger actuatingmeans also causing return movement of said second plunger; thereby causing said. lever to be moved out vof engagement with said transf vrsely movable plate; forward' movement of the r'st named plunger then causing said trip mechanism to be actua-ted, thereby' releasing and causing movement of said transversely mcvingflate at. the rear oflsaid articles; and sai plungerV .actuatingmeans then causin'g return-movement of said plunger -said transverse plate serving to hold sai articles and wrapper during movement of said plungerplate extension clear of said articles and wrapper.

A packaging machine comprising a reciprocating plungen" a wrapper folding channel, a receivin' ohemben'and a paste applying device .havmgvertically reciprocating movements in said receiving cham-- ber; -means for supporting articles etween said wrapper folding channel and said plunger, means for supporting a wrapper between said articles and said wrapper folding channel; and means for actuating'said plunger whereby forward movement thereof causes said articles and wrapper to be forced through said wrapper folding channel and into said receiving chamber, whereby part of said wrapper is folded around said articles and an unfolded part remains in said wrapper folding channeh means for actuating said paste applying device whereby downward movement thereof causes paste A to be applied to said-folded wrapper, and also causes downward movementk of Said articles and wrapper, whereby said wrapper folding channel causes ,said unfolded part of the wrapper'to be further folded around 85 said articles, and also causes a portion 0fsaid wrapper to extend upward across said wrapper folding channel, sai means for actuating said plunger then causing other articles and wrapper to be forced through e() said wrapper folding channel; and the wrapper thereby partly foldedv aro'und'the last named articles, and. moving into said receiving chamber, by taking against said upturned portion of the first named wra 95 I and a paste applying device havin-g vertically reciprocating movements in said re.

A packaging machine comprising a wrapper folding channel, a receiving chairn ber, and a paste applying device having vertically recii'irocating movements insaid receiving chamber, means whereby a series of articles and a wrapper are-forced through said wrapper folding channel and into said receiving chamber, whereby part of said wrapper is folded around said articles and an unfolded part remains in said 'wrapper folding channel, means for actuating said paste applying device whereby downward movement thereof causes paste to be applied to said folded wrapper, and also causes downward movement of said article and wrapper, whereby said wrapper folding channel causes said unfolded part of the wrapper to be further folded around said articles and also causes a portion of said wrapper to extend upward across said wrapper folding channel.. said means for forcing articles and wrapper then causing another series of articles and a wrapper to be forced through said wrapper folding channel; and the wrapper thereby los l portion to be folded partly folded around the last named articles and moving into said receiving channel, by taking against said upturned portion of the iirst named wrapper, causes said upturned upon said applied paste; said means for actuating said paste applying device then causing downward movement thereof, thereby causing paste to be applied to the wrapper folded around the second series of articles, and also causing downward movement thereof, thereby causing downward movement of the first series of articles and wrapper; a vertically disposed receiving channel and a plunger having vertical reciprocating movements therein; and a reciprocating plunger adapted to force said rst series of articles and wrapper into range with said vertically reciprocating plunger, said vertically reciprocating plunger serving to force said articles and Wrapper into said vertical receiving channel, substantially as described.

In a packaging machine, a vertically disposed. receiving channel and a vplunger having vertical reciprocating movements therein; a second plunger having reciprocating movements at a right angle to those of the lirst named plunger; means whereby twrapped articles are brought to rest in front of said second plunger, means for actuating said second plunger whereby forward movement thereof causes said wrapped articles to be forced to rest upon the rst named plunger; means for actuating the first named plunger whereby said wrapped articles are forced upward into said receiving channel; movable bars forming part of said channel, inclined links pivoted to said bars and arranged to permit movement of said bars away from said wrapped articles during their upward travel, and causing movement of said bars into i'rietional engagement with said wrapped articles during return movement of the first named plunger.
