To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that WILLIAM F, Knr/ir, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State or' lowA have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Covers, otwhich the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in book covers, and the main object of my invention is the provision of a flexible leather cover of ornamental and attractive appearance, which will provide a cover or protector lfor books of various kinds, and which can be instantlyapplied and removed from the covers of the book.
Another object of my invention is the provision ota iiexible leather covcr which will be constructed from a single strip or blank and which will have upon its'engaging cover portions means for carrying a pencil and also a card case or'pocket book, male ing the device highly useful as a book cover or foy1 other purposes. y
Another object of my invention is the provision of a cover of the character and for the purpose stated, constructed from a single blank and carrying upon its inside a card case or pocket-book and pencil receiver, and having upon its Vouter face an attached securing iiap and carrying handle, the whole structure producing an efficient, useful and highly desirable article.
'With these objects in view, the invention consists in the book cover Inade from a single strip or blank, and in the novel constructionand arrangement of parts, substantially as shown, described and particularly defined by the claim.
Figure l represents a plan view of the cover, shown in open pondition, looking at the outside and partly broken away to disclose details of construct-ion. Fig. 2 represents a similar view looking at the inner side or face of the cover, and Fig, 3 represents a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a plan view of the cover in, closed and secured position, andv Figs. 5 and-IA 6 represent plan views of the inner and outer faces of a cover of slightly modied construction. l
In manufacturing the book cover, I employ a lining sheet A, t'o which is secured by the turned edge B, the outerblank or cover portion C, which is made from a sin-f' Remmen.
gle strip of leather or il. has its ends turned in providing the tiaps D, which provide the pai ci end poel Jts E, in. which the covers of the lao-il. are received and retained by the flaps tapeas well as the lining being ined the turned-in edge l?, which )s ,secured i v the stitches E. I
From. this construction it will hn i that-"the cover comprises the linn ble outer covering andthe enf n retain the covers of the book, and anon one vof the iiaps D is secured the case which provides a convenient card case or pocket book, and upon the other flap is secured the elongated small pocket G, which .forms a pencil receiving` receptacle, thus providing an outer book cover and placing upon the inside a card case cr purse and a pencil pocket, thus disposing the cover and case and pocket in the most desirable and advantageous relation. A provided upon one side with aslit H in which is secured by stitches JA the tab K carrying the socket plate L, which engages the studA fastening L carried by the other -side of the cover, this construction forming a most desirable means for fastening the cover upon the book and also protecting the card case or purse and the pencil 'holder'.
Another important feature of my invention is the manner of securing the carrying handle M, which consists in placing between the lining and cover the base strips N and securing thereon the handle retaining stri s O, which pass through slits l@ in the cover and engage the enlarged or flaring ends M of the carrying handle and thus provide a convenient means for carrying the article and also a novel means for retaining the handle in the cover.
From the 4foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the manner otY using and the many advantages of my inven- 'tion will be readily understood, and it will be apparent that the article can he used as a book cover, with its several attachments perused solely as a card case orpurse and .pencll carrier, and that in any event it will prove thoroughly ecient and desirable. lt will also be noted that the article will perform its manifold purposes in a practical manforrning their desired functions, or il jnxaybeV ner, is highly ornamental and attractive, can
'ble material and u55 The cover is further be mede from any proper material, and is calculated to provea most useful and desirable article.
I claim:
The herein described article, consisting of the inner lining, the outer cover portion having the pair of end aps, and the securing edge for retaining the lining, cover and flaps, the ystrips mounted upon the lining be- 10 tween thellining and coventhehandle retaining strips fastened to said strips, the handle lnufng the flaring ends and retained by the handle-retaining strips, and the tab secured to one 4end. of the cover and having a socket plate and a stud upon the other end of the 15 cover to be engaged by said socket plate, Jfor fasLening the two sides of the cover.
in testimony whereof l. ax my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
