F.L.BOSTOCK.
TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED 11.116,26, 1912.
Attorneys i FREDERICK L. BOSTOCK, OF PITTSTON, PENNSYLVANIA. l
. TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent. f
Application fired August 26, 1912. serialno. 717,148. t
To all whom t may vconcern l Be it known that I, FREDERICK L. BosTocK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittston, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Tool, of which the following 1s a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in tools, the primary object of the invention being the provision of a handy tool for use in hanging windows and doors, wherein the main body of the tool similates a claw hammer" and is provided, in the end opposite to the claw hammer, with a ratchet brace for reception of bits of varying char-y acters.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings-Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view through the complete tool. Fig. 2 is an end view of the brace end of the tool. Fig. 3 is a section taken online 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. t is a section taken on line 4 4.- ofFig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a longitudinal member or shank, which as shown is provided with a central bore or socket 2 for the removable reception of a saw blade 3, a spring clamp 4 being disposed at the mouth of the socket to retain the saw within the same, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
A hammer head 5 is provided upon one end of the shank 1 and is formed with the claws 6 and striking head 7, the same providing in reality a cross head or handle for properly rotating, depressing or pulling longitudinally upon the shank 1, the purpose of which will presently appear. Formed below the striking head 7 is a nail holder 8 having the longitudinally disposed outlet or throat 9, with the spring 10 disposed at the extreme inner end of the holder and in a position to act as a cushion upon the head of the nail N and offering sufficient resistance to permit of the initial introduction of the nail into the surface, the nail being introduced to the holder through the throat 9 and after the initial fastening to be removed therethrough.
The opposite end of the shank 1 is reduced and shouldered as at 11 for the reception of the metal cap 12 and disposed centrally of the shank and in longitudinal alinement with the socket 2 is a socket 13, said socket 13 being enlarged as at 14 for the reception respectively, of the spiral portion 15 and the supporting shank 16 of the brace 17. By means of the lug or pin 18, the brace may be secured against rotation and sliding movement, this structure being vconventional and similar tobit braces now in use.
As shown in Fig. 3, the pin or lug -1S is disposed for movement into and out of engagement with the member 16, the same being provided with the milled head 2O having the two notches a--a for the reception one at a time of the spring pawl ZJ, so that the pin 18 may be locked with its end seated within the socket c to prevent the rotation of the brace 17 or be moved outwardly to permit of the proper sliding and rotating movements thereof when operating a bit.
' A plurality of sockets 21are formed in theV incased end of the shank 1 about the bore 13 and provide a receptacle for the boring bit 22, the screw driver bit 23, and for the other tools that may be detachably connected to the brace 17. The spring clips 24' and 25 are provided for locking the bits' within the respective sockets so that the same may not be accidentally displaced during the manipulation of the tool.
The saw blade 3 isprovided with a shank to iit detachably in the brace 17 the brace 17, being locked against slidingand rotative y Patented sept. 1, 1914..
movement when used in connection with the saw.
What is claimed is: l
1. Atool comprising a hammer head, a handle carried thereby, a slot provided in said hammer head and lying upon the longitudinal axis of said handle and head, the said slot substantially U-shaped in cross section with the opening thereof extending at right angles to the plane defined by the longitudinal axis of the handle and head, during the nailing operation, said U-shaped slot disposed upon the rear of said hammer head, said U-shaped slot adapted to house a nail therein and adapted to hold the same.
2. A tool comprisinga hammer head, a handle carried thereby, a slot formed in said hammer head positioned upon the longitudinal median plane of said handle and hammer head, the said slot disposed intermediate the center of gravity of the said hammer In testimony thatlclain the foregoing as head and Szudhandle and approxnnatlng' my own, I have ,hereto affixed my signature l0 the center of perousslon, sald slot U-shape 1n 1n thepresenee of two Wltnesses.
transverse cross section and opening at ri 'ht 1 5 angles to the plane described by the longgtrr FRLDERXGK L BOSTOCK' dnal axis of the handle during the nailing /Vtnesses: operation, Said U-shzrped Slot adapted to T. B. MolFAT, house and hold a nail therein. JOHN R. REA-P.
