To all whom it may concern Be 1t known that I, EDWARD ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the countyof Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in B1ll-F1les,;of which the following is a specification.

My invention relatesto'bill" files, and

a file hook secured to thecard; I It is the object of my invention to provide I a bill file of this character Whichshall be" particularly simple in construction and in which the file hook is adjustably secured to the card so that, the same may be laid flat] upon the card for shipping purposes and yetj readily drawn into operative position when desired.

It is also an object of my invention to provide means on the card cooperating with means on the file 'hook for holding; the same 1 rigidly in position when drawn into operative position.

The full objects and advantages of invention will appear in connection with particularly pointed out in the claims- In the drawings, illustrating the application of my invention in oneform, Figure 1 is a perspective view'of a bill file embodying my improvements when the file hook is' in operative position. Fig. 2 1s a planvieiv and may have any desired printed matter upon the face thereof, an eyelet 11 being provided for hanging the card in position.

The lower portion of the card is provided on the face thereof with a reinforcing pad 12 which may consist of cardboard, cloth or any other desired substance. Upon the rear of the body portion 10 in similar position to pad 12 another pad 13 may, if desired, be employed, the two pads being secured to the said body portion 10 by gluing or also by means of an eyelet 14. The file hook comprises a suspending shank 15, an angularly offset portion 16, and a pointed hook portion 17 extending back nearly parallel withthe shank portion 15. Whenit is desired; to assemblethe file hook in operative position this is done by merely turning same so that the shank 15 and hook 17 are in a"plane:perpendicular to the card "and drawing theshankoutwardly until the hook-like portion"1'8' comes outside of the pad 12,.the depressed portion 19 gripping the pad and card, and the crook engaging the eye 14, all as indicated in Fig. 5. The depressed portion 19 will be to some extent forced into the body of the pad or cardboard wvhichit engages, resulting in holding the file hook firmly'in a plane at right angles pad and: back again I to the'plane of the card 10. When the bill file thus assembled is hung up by means of the eye 11 the hook 17 will be held extended outwardly in proper position to receive bills or slips. f a 1 It will be apparent that my bill file is extremely simple, cheap to manufacture, easy to ship and handle, may be readily as sembled for use by a single movement, and

when so assembled is eificient and satisfactory to a high degree.

In the modification shown in'Fig. 4,-back pad 13 is triangular and has a hole adjacent its upper edge passing through the card only. A projection 22 may be formed at the bottom of the card through which passes a hole 21.

It is obvious that there are various different modifications of structure possible in making this bill hook which should be in-' cluded in my invention. In the manufacture of this article it is probable that the form of my invention which is the most in expensive to construct, simple to assemble and efiicient in use would be adopted.

I claim:

1."A bill file comprising a card, a pad se-; cured to a portion of said card, said card being'provided with holes adjacent the in-. ner and outer edges of the pad in the central line of the card, and a file-hook having a shank extending through said holes and a. hook portion on said shank engaging the pad to hold the shank and the file hook in operative position.

2.- A;bill file comprising a card, a pad secured to a portion of said card, said card be-' ing provided With holes adjacent the inner; and outer edges of the pad in the central line of the card, and av file hook having a shank extending through said holesand a hook portion. on said shank engagingthe pad to hold the shank and the file hook in opera- 1 tiveposition, said file hook having all parts thereof in a common plane and having the shank thereof extending through the said holes so that the hook thereon may be disengaged from said pad and the' file hook maybe laid flatupon the card and will be held within the margin thereof when the bill files are packed'for shipping.

3. A bill file comprising a card, a pad secured to a portion of. said 'card,said card being provided with holes adjacent the inner and outer edges of the pad in thecentral line of the cardyand a file hook having ashank extending-through said holes and a hook portion on said-shank engagingthe pad to hold the shank and the file hook in operative position, said shank hook having an" outwardly 'turnedend-and a depressed portion for gripping the card and pad between the same and the shank.

' 4. A bill file comprising a card adapted to receive advertising matter thereon, means at one end for suspending the card, a pair of pads secured at opposite sides of the other end of the card along the central line thereof, a hole being provided through said pads and card adjacent the inner edge of the pads, and a file hook having the shank thereof extending through said hole and having a hooklike member at the end' of the shank gripping the pads between the shank and said member to hold the file hook in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the card.

5. A bill file comprising a card, apadsecured to a portion of said card, said card having holesadjacent the inner and outer edges of said pad, and a file hook having a shank extending through said holes and ahook portion on, said shank engaging the pad ,to hold the shank and the file hook in operative position.

6. A bill file comprising a card, a pad secured to a portion of said card, said card havinga hole adjacent the inner edge of said pad,-and a file hook having a shank extending through said hole and a hook portion on said shank engaging the pad to hold the shank and the file hook in operative position.

7. A bill file comprising a card adapted to receive advertising matter thereon, means at one end of the central line of the card for suspending the card, a pad at the other end of the card along the central line thereof, said card being provided with a hole in said central line of the card adjacent the inner edge of-the pad, and a file hook having the shank thereof extending through said'hole and having a hook-like member at the end of the shank gripping the pad and card between the shank and said member to hold the file hook in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the card.
