Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. FISHER, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK..
||v|PRovEMENT IN SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 110,840, dated January I0, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. FISHER, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specitication.
The nature of' my invention consists in so constructing,` a shoe that it can be used either as a lace-shoe or as a gaiter or button-shoe, at the option of the wearer.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side view of my shoe, showing` the same used as a gaiter; and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same thrown open. Fig. 3 is a section of a shoe laced.
The foot part ot' my shoe is made in substantially the same manner as usually done. The upper A has an extension, B, which reaches as high up on the leg` as may be desired, and covers the front part of the leg'. The rear edges of this extension B, which come at the sides ofthe leg, are provided with button-holes a a.. The back or heel part, C, eX- tends also upward for adistance to correspond with the front extension, B, and at its front edges are iiaps D D, which reach in front of the leg, and are provided with holes for lacing'.
The flaps D D are cut with and form part of the back C. 0n the sides of the shoe are buttons b b, as shown.
The shoe thus constructed is, as will be seen, open on both sides, and may be worn in various ways, at the option of the wearer. As a lace-shoe, let the front extension, B, come around the front of the leg. and the tiaps D I) fold around the same, and laced in front the same as an ordinary lace-shoe. As a gaiter or button-shoe the tlaps D D are folded around the leg, and the front extension placed on the outside thereof and buttoned on the sides. Buttons may also be placed on the front extension, B, with button-holes .in the edges of the llaps D I), so as to button the shoe in front as well as on the sides.
The shoe, especially a gentlemans shoe,
made as above described, open on both sides,
may be fastened merely by a` hook at the upper edge.
I do not connc myself to any particular formation or shape ot' the front extension, B, and the aps D D, as they may be cut in any desired manner to suit the fancy or taste.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A shoe made with the extended flaps B D, formed substantially in the manner showmso that the shoe may be convertible at pleasure into a buttoned or laced gaiter or shoe.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J. WV. FISHER.
