CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
SPOOL FOR li'IUSIG-ROLLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 14., 1913. Serial No. 769,898.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, J A0013 C. Korrnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Spool for Music-Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
The obj eet of this invention is to provide a new and improved spool for music rolls. These spools consist of a cylindrical body portion having end flanges. It is common to make the right-hand flange rigid with the body portion, and to make the left-hand flange capable of slight axial movement, the principal object being to have the left end flange adjustable, and movable lengthwise of the spool to allow for expansion of the paper roll in moist atmospheres.
To this end, the invention consists of a spool for music rolls comprising a hollow cylindrical body portion having a righthand end flange formed or secured thereto, and a left-hand end flange having a hub provided with a mortise or socket or mortises or sockets into which a portion or portions of the body are forced so that the same substantially form tenons engaging said mortises. In the preferred form, said tenons are made of less width axially of the spool than the width of said mortises, whereby said flange is held to said body portion but is free to move lengthwise thereof for var1- ous distances. I
The material preferably employed is of a non-hydroscopic nature, such as rubber fiber or composition rubber.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which, I
Figure l is a side elevation partly in section, illustrating the parts; Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the parts assembled; Fig. 3 is a similar view, the flange being shown in section illustrating the way the parts are held together; Fig. 4 is a side view illustrating the complete spool, and Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. at.
Referring to the drawing and in detail, A designates the cylindrical body portion of the spool which preferably is made hollow and which has a right hand flange B secured or formed thereon.
O designates the left-hand end flange which is provided with a projecting hub D. Formed in the hub D are a number of mortises or sockets E. These mortises are preferably arranged circumferentially of the hub. The hub is placedin the end of the body portion, as shown in Fig. 2, and them the material of the body portion is forced inwardly by suitable tools so that tenons F will be formed therein which will fit into the mortises or sockets E formed in the hub D. The tenons F are preferably made of less width axially of the spool than the width of said mortises, whereby said flange G is held to said body portion, but is free to move slightly axially and lengthwise thereof. By this arrangement, a spool of the character referred to can be economically manufactured.
A single mortise and tenon may be employed, but the preferred construction is to employ a plurality.
The end flange C is free to move lengthwise to accommodate music sheets of slightly different widths and to accommodate the expansion and contraction of the music sheet from shrinkage or expansion caused by atmospheric changes.
The details and arrangements herein shown and described may be greatly varied by a skilled mechanic without departing from the scope thereof as expressed in the claims. Therefore, T do not wish to be limited to the exact construction shown, but
What 1 do claim is 1. A spool for music rolls, comprising a hollow cylindrical body portion, and an end flange having a hub projecting within said portion, a mortise formed in said hub, and
Patented Aug. 18., 1914:.
a depression in the body portion forming a tenon engaging said mortise to limit both the longitudinal and angular relative movement of said body portion and flange.
2. A spool for music rolls, comprising a hollow cylindrical body portion, and an end flange having a hub projecting within said body portion, a mortise formed in said hub, and a depression in the body portion forming a tenon engaging said mortise, said tenon being of less width axially of the spool than the width of the mortise, whereby said flange is held from rotation and removal relative to said body portion but is free to move a limited distance axially thereof.
3. A spool for music rolls, comprising a hollow cylindrical body portion, and an end flange having a projecting hub, with a series of mortises formed therein, the material of the body portion being depressed into said mortises to secure the flange to said body portion and to limit the relative longitudinal and angular movements of said parts.
4. A spool for music rolls, comprising a hollow cylindrical body portion and an end flange having a projecting hub fitting therein, mortisesformed in said hub, the material of the body portion being depressed inwardly to form tenons to engage said Inortises, said tenons being of less width axially of the spool than the width of said mortises,
whereby said flange is held from rotation relative to said body portion but is free to move a limited distance only lengthwise thereof. 7 V
