This invention relates to expansion cores and more particularly to a core designed for use in rolls of print paper such as used in newspaper printing. f
' 5 lt is the present practice, in rolling print paper, to roll it upon the core which is shipped with the paper and when the paper is used from the core the latter is then returned to the paper company from whom the paper was purchased thus causing not only the expense of shipping the cores but also the expense of a man to take care of the cores as well as the necessity of keeping a relatively large stock of cores upon hand. It is an object of this invention to provideV an expansion core particularly designed for use in rolls of print paper, which may be contracted topermit its removal from the roll of paper, after the roll has been completed, and which may be contracted for insertion into a. roll of paper, at the printing press after which it may be expanded to properly lit the interior of the roll thereby requiring only two cores, one at the paper -mills and one at the printing establishment for properly taking care of the roll and will consequently' eliminate the expense contingent on the use of cores as above referred to.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein n Y Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through 35 the improved expansion core.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved expansion core comprises a central shaft 1, which is rectangular in cross section throughout the major portion of its length and has its ends 2 and 3 rounded, in cross section to provide trunnions or 50 bearing shafts for the core. The rectangular shaft l has a plurality of blocks 4 attached thereto at spaced points, in any suitable manner such as by set screws 5. Thefnut 11 has an annular ange 12 formed atl one end thereof which is engaged by the annular channel 13 formed onthe end cap 14. The end cap 14 is preferably made intwo sections which are clamped together as shown at 15 in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
Radial pins 16 are carried by the end cap 14 and engage through suitable openings 17 formed in the strips 8 for connecting these 85 strips with the end cap 14 to permit the strips to be moved longitudinally of the shaft l by adjustment of the nut 11 along the threaded portion 10. The longitudinal movement of the'strips 8, will either move 9c the strips inwardly towards the shaft or outwardly from the shaft 1 depending upon the direction in which they are moved owing to the slidable engagement between the inclined engaging surfacesof the blocks 4 95 Suitable'gui'des 18 are carried by the shaft 1 for engaging the side edges of the blocks 7 and guiding their relative move ment. An end cap '20 is detachabiy mounted upon ythe end ofthe shaft 1 remote from the capV 14 and it is held in place by a set screw 21.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, we do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claim hereunto appended.
