To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JoHN LEWIS PER- KINS and John O. STANLEY, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of IIolyoke, in the county of IIampden and; State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in P aper- Slitting Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention for improvements in ma chines for longitudinally slitting a sheet or web of paper running from a supply roll, dividing the sheet or web into a plurality of narrower sheets or strips, particularly relates to the construction of the bed-roll with which the axially adjustable slitting disks, or rotary knives, eoact; and has for its object the attainment of a construction of bed-roll which, while being to all intents and purposes peripherally continuous, affords an even and firm bearing for the sheet of paper running thereover and partially around; and which roll is susceptible of having portions or sections thereof, with which the adjustable rotary slitter disks coact, variably positioned accordingly as the slitting on lines comparatively widely separated, or close together, is required to be performed.
The invention consists, in a paper slitting machine, in the combination with a plurality of axially adjustable rotary slitting disks, of a bed-roll comprising a plurality of axially adjustable sections in pairs, each section of a pair consisting of a cylindrical portion and endwise extending separated portions having surfaces continuous with the periphery of the cylindrical portion, the projections of the one section of a pair being adapted for dispositions between the projections of the other section, and means for confining the axially adjustable parts in their desired relations.

Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a front elevation; Fig. 3 is a cross section, on a larger scale, through the bed-roll. Fig. 4 is a front view and partial longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the bed roll, the parts in section being shown as taken on the line 44, Fig. 3. The section line 33, on Fig. 4, indicates the plane on which the section 33 is taken.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.
In the drawings,-A represents the frame of the slitting machine in which are mounted the slitter shaft B having a series of rotary knives or disk slitters C O aflixcd thereon, but adjustable along the length of the shaft B, and the bed-roll l).
The web or sheet :0 of paper runs from the supply roll, shown at the right in Fig. 1 upwardly partially around the guide and pressure roll E and between the latter and the bed roll, and partially around the bed roll and subject to the action of the slitter disks, and thence runs divided on longitudinal lines to a take-up roll F, being intermediately guided over the roll G.
The slitter disks O are confined in their adjustmcnts either comparatively closely together, or quite widely separated by the set screws a which are passed through the suitably elongated hubs thereof to bind against the slitter shaft, as heretofore usual.
The bed-roll comprises the bed-roll shaft 1) horizontally journaled in the frame, parallel with, and suitably adjacent to, the slitter shaft; and a plurality of sections (Z (l in pairs. Each section of a pair consists of a cylindrical portion 10 fitting and endwise adjustable on the bed-roll shaft and endwise extending separated portions or fingers 12, 12 having surfaces continuous with the periphery of the cylindrical portion. The projections of one section of a pair are adapted for dispositions between the projections of the other section. One of the sections of each pair has a hub 1. 3 extended endwise from the cylindrical portion 10 and concentrically within the said projections 12; and a set screw 14 engages through such hub of the one section to bind against the bed roll shaft, while a set screw 15 engages through the other section of a given pair from a peripheral portion thereof, as shown at the left of Fig. 4, to bind against the bed roll shaft.
In the drawings the slitter disks are shown as adjusted and set for slitting the paper into strips of a desired width, and the pairs of adjustable bed-roll sections are represented as but partially contracted in their relations to each other, the endwise projections or fingers of one section of each pair interlocking about half way within the depth of the spaces beintents and purposes, are continuous.

An end of each bed roll section opposite from the location of the projections 12 constitutes the surface relatively to which one of the slitter disks, in the plane thereof, and slightly overlapping, coacts for dividing the web of paper running between the bed-roll and slitter.
As manifest, pairs of the bed roll sections may be adjusted so that such sections are axially distended or very much contracted according to the desired distance between the slitting lines. The pairs of sections in any of their adjustments provide paper-supporting bed-roll peripheral surfaces which, to all The more or less long spaces, between the ends of one set of the projections and the end walls of the spaces between the other set of projections, owing to their comparatively slight widths, are insignificant and cause no practical impairment of the proper support and guidance of the paper to be slitted.
It being a matter of convenience to lift the shafts in this machine out from their bearings, an increased number of pairs of bedroll sections may be mounted in compactly adjusted relations on the bed-roll shaft with a suitable corresponding number of slitter disks on the shaft B. And it is, on the other hand, apparent that for extremely wide slitting a lessened number of the pairs of bed roll sections may be required, the same in their distended relations filling the working length of the shaft.
IVe prefer to have one of the bed roll sections confined by the set screw 14 engaging through the internal hub 13, while the other section is secured by the set screw 15 passing to its shaft engagement from a peripheral portion of the section, as thereby only one screw hole for a pair is presented at the periphery. It will be understood that it is practically inexpedient to make fastenings of both sections of a pair on the shaft by set screws passing through internal hubs of such sections owing to the fact that when the two sections are slid closely together the projections of one so closes the space opening to the periphery of the hub as to make access to a set screw thereat impossible. One or both of the bed roll sections of each pair is equipped with ahardened steel end ring or collar (7 for constituting a good shear surfaceagainst wh ch the slitter disk is to cooperate. WVe claim: 1. In a paper slitting machine, the combination with a plurality of axially adjustable ssaesa rotary slitting disks, of a bed-roll comprising a plurality of axially adjustable sections in pairs, each section of a pair consisting of a cylindrical portion and endwise extending separated portions having surfaces continuous with the periphery of the cylindrical portion, the projections of the one section of a pair being adapted for dispositions between the projections of the other section, and means for confining the axially adjustable parts in their desired relations.
2. In a paper slitting machine, the combination with a shaft having a plurality of axi ally adjustable rotary slitting disks thereon,
and means for confining said disks in their adjusted positions on said shaft, of a bed-roll comprising a shaft, a plurality of sections in pairs, each section of a pair consisting of a cylindrical portion fitting and endwise adjustable on the bed roll shaft and endwise extending separated portions having surfaces continuous with the periphery of the cylindrical portion, the projections of the one section of a pair being adapted for dispositions between the projections of the other section thereof, and set screws engaged through the individual sections for confining them in their desired relations to each other and to the disks, on their shaft.
3. In a paper slitting machine, the combination with a shaft having a plurality of axially adjustable rotary slitting disks thereon, and means for confining said disks in their adjusted positions on said shaft, of a bed-roll comprising a shaft, a plurality of sections in pairs, each section of a pair consisting of a cylindrical portion fitting and endwise adjustable on the bed roll shaft, and endwise extending separated portions having surfaces continuous with the periphery of the cylindrical portion, the projections of the one section of a pair being adapted for dispositions between the projections of the other section, and one of the sections of a pair having a hub extended from the cylindrical portion within said projections, a set screw engaging through the hub of the one section to bind against the bed roll shaft, and a set screw engaging through the other section from a peripheral portion thereof to bind against the bed roll shaft.
