HARRY J. HICK, or ALLIANCE, onro, ASSIGNOR, BYMESNEASSIGNMENTS, are THE MCGASKEY REGISTER COMPANY, A CORPQRATION OF OHIO.
(INCORPORATED IN 1914,) OF ALLIANCE, OHIO,
FILING .arrnreivcn.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented A11 18, 1914:.
Original application filed October 13. 1911, Serial Ne. 654,500. Divided and this application filed. December 3, 1912. Serial No. 734,6?9.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY J. H1012, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Filing Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to appliances or devices that are adapted to receive and hold papers, documents, paper slips, and similar articles and permitting them to be classified under suitable headings, whereby they may be inserted, removed or inspected rapidly and in a simple manner. N
This application is a division of my application filed October 13, 1911, Serial Number 654,500.
For the purpose of illustration, T have, in the accompanying drawings, shown and herein described one form of filing appliance embodying my invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an appliance embodying my invention, parts "of the casing being broken away. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view through the lower portion of the holders. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the holders. Fig. i is fragmentary perspective view of two holders and the pivotal connections be tween them. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the pivotal connections; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the parts shown in Fig. 5 detached. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary view with parts broken away.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a suitable casing having a platform or support 1*, a back 1 and a forwardly extending frame 1 which may serve as a writing desk. The casing may also include side members, be tween which may be provided one or more drawers or trays 1 2 indicates a series of holders for holding or supporting papers, or paper slips, and
comprising a front or forward end holder 2 a back or rear end holder 2 and a plurality of intermediate'holders 2. All the holders are preferably of uniform size, and may be normally arranged back to back in. vertical position. 7
'Each holder comprises a back 2, which is preferably formed from sheet metal, a hinge bar'2", side members 2, spacing devices 2 and paper clips 2 The hinge bars 2 extend from end to end along the lower end of the holders. Each bar is' preferably formed by extending the metal of the adjacent back and bending it into a hollow rectangular bar. The free edge of the metal may be arranged flatagainst and secured to the adwhich forms aback or support for a heading or eye signal. Only one clip or slip Y engaging device 2 is shown in the draw- 1ngs, but it will be understood that I provide a series of such devices on both faces of each back 2 ,-'except the backs of the front and rear holders, which are only provided with clips on their inner faces. At 2,
the front and rear holders are provided with external plates or walls, formed from sheet metal, which give said holders a neat and finished appearance.
3 indicates pivotal connections between the holders 2 connecting said holders to gether and permitting each to move or swing relative to the adjoining holder. By this construction the holders may be operated one by one or'in groups from the vertical to the horizontalposition, and vice versa, for the purpose of exposing either face of any desired holder. The connections 3 com prise a series of devices 3 at least one of which is carried by each holder, a plate 3" interposed between each device 3 and the adjacent, hinge bar 2 and provided with pivot bearing members 3 depending from their opposite ends, 'which members are preferably integrally connected with the plates 3*, and pintles or pivot pins 3 each of which connects adjacent pivotal bearing plates together. As clearly shown in .the drawings eachtdevice 3 is formed from a piece or' section of sheet metal and. pressed or bent on longitudinal lines to encircle and snugly fit the walls of the hinge bar with the plate 5 interposed between it and the hinge bar 2 The opposite longitudinal ends of the section of metal forming a de vice 3- are preferably bent and arranged to lie flat against the opposite faces of-the adjacent back 2 These ends may be secured to the back by rivets 2 The shape of the hinge bar in cross section prevents any relative movement between it and the supportin g device 8 in a direction circumferentially of the said bar. 7 v
,The plates?! areof a width to fit snugl'yi between the side walls of the supportingide vice 3 and are also of such length that'the w depending bearin'g-members engage with .the..oppos1te .end edges of the supportmg device 3. .As the supporting device 8 is arranged to snugly-fit the side walls of the V hinge "bar 2 and the bottom face of the plate. 3 the latter'will be rigidly secured in position and maintained against movements in longitudlnal or lateral-d rections. The bearin members 3 w1ll therefore be su a: I
.ported at right angles to the hmge bars 2 The plates 3"v and bear ng members 3" may be stamped or otherwlse formed from a single 'piece of sheet metal.
At3, each bearingmemberB is formed withopenings near its opposite ends to re- 'ing device '3.
eeive the pintles 3, the openingsin one member ahnmg-with the. openings n the member at the opposite side of the adjacent support- As will be understood, the openings g in the membersB of a device 73 carried by one holder register with the openings 3 of the member carried by the device 3 of theadjoining holder or holders to receive thepintles 8; Since each pintle 3 is.
of/a length to extendthrough the alined openings in the bearing, members of the I pivot .c'onnectionsbetween adj oiningholders,
a long bearing is provided. The opposite ends of each pintle 3 are preferably'upset' on the opposite outerbearing members of each two,ad o1n1ng pivotal devlces 3 on the same bar. :They areof a' length so. that after the vides a verydong anddurablebearing for the up-setting operatiomthey maintain the inner bearinginembers ofsaid devices in close engagement with the interposechmembers of the device 3 on' the adjacent-oar and thus prevent ,endwise movement of vone @holder relative. to the adjoining holder or holders. As the bearingmembers depend downwardly vertically from the hinge bar 2*, it. willv be seen thatone formsa bearing for the other,
, as the. adjacent holder is operated. Prefer- .ablyl provide each alternatevhinge bar 2* withone pivot connection 3* and each of the I remaining hinge balSQ -With', two pivot connectlons 3 --Wl11Ql1.Etl6. arranged on .opposite sides ofthe connections 8 on the-alternate hinge bars. This arrangementnotonly prohingebars, butserves .to keep them in alinementsinceeach pintle has support on one ,hinge bar upon-opposite sides of its bearing connection with the adjoining hinge bar.
I iindi'cates a bearing mounted on the support 1 and arranged to removably. recelve a pivot 8 carried by bearlng plates '3" at the forward edge of the front" holder 2; This it support being at the forward end ofrthe series of holders 2, maintains them in up right position with the rear holder against the back l or a yielding device" 5, .which 7 7 its up and down movements.
7 The operative position of the guide device '6 is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. In the form ofthe invention-herein illustrated and described, the rearward leaves are moved forwardly and upwardlywhen' anyof the for: ward leaves are operated from the vertical Since the to the horizontal position; when the operated leaves are returnedto the vertical position, the rearward leavesmo-ve rearwardly' -,and downwardly. The-guide device 6 is arranged to vbe engaged. by the upper or free edge of the rearm'ost leaf and as said rearmost leafmoves upwardly or downwardly .it isguided in such movements by the device 6. ;The guide device 6 may be provided-with a latch 6 at onnear its free end. This-latch is so'arranged that when 'all of the leaves have been operated, except the rearmost leaf, the free edge of the latter leaf'will ride into engagement with the latch 6 and be locked thereby. against operation. This devicemay also be pivoted to the back, whereby it will fall by gravity into the position shown in F ig.- 1, whereby the latch. will operation of all the holders. 7 7
By constructing the pivotal connections betweenthe holders of sheet metal all heavy parts are \avoided, -thus materially lessen- .ing theweight Of:,tl1e holders and' on account of the long. pivotal bearings which I 7 provide, it isi'possible to connectthe holders together with one set-ofv connections centrally arranged between the-ends thereof instead of two sets of connections arranged supporting (ilQVlGGuiS bent onlongitudinal .-1ines,{it will beseen that the bearing plates carried thereby will be readily supported relative tov each. other and effectively resist prevent the .near their opposite'ends. Also, since each all strains endwise of thesaid devices. It.
will-also beseen thatias the bearing memi-bers are formed'by bending a section. of metal at rightanglesto the. bottom walhof the supporting device, they will be strengthened in a longitudinal direction and pre vented from being bent or twisted on transverse lines, the effect of which being that one bearing plate will serve as a brace for adjoining bearing plates.
To those skilled in the art of making filing appliances of the class described, many alterations in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of my invention will suggest themselves, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. li ly disclosures and the description herein are purely illustrative, and are not intended to be in any sense limiting.
What I claim is:
1. The combination of a series of holders each having a hinge bar, and connections for pivotally connecting the hinge bars together, each connection comprising a supporting device having bottom and side Walls arranged to fit snugly the walls of the adjacent hinge bar, a plate interposed between the bottom wall of the supporting device and the adjacent hinge bar and provided with integral bearing members depending from its opposite ends, the said bearing members being formed with openings to receive a pintle, and means for securing the said supporting device to the adjacent hinge bar.
