Description

UNITED STATES WILLIAM MONTGOMERY, OE
PATENT OEEICE.
ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINE CARD-TEETH.
' To all whom t may concern,.-
Be itknown that I, WILLIAM MONTGOMERY, ot' Roxbury, in the `county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have :invented` a new and Improved Mode of Making Filleting or Cards for Carding Wool; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, letters, ligures, and references thereof. I
In the said drawings, Figure l denotes a side View of a piece of my improved filleting. Fig. 2 is a cross-section ot' the same. Fig. 3 is a front View of one of the improved iilletplates. Fig. 4 is a side view, and Fig. 5 a top View, of the same.
In the manufacture of iilleting or cards for carding Wool or other fibrous material it has been customary to manufacture them of bent wires 4inserted through leather.
Instead of making the teeth of round wire in the manner as heretofore, my improved method consists in forming them from a plate or sheet of metal cut and bent into the form of two triangles united to and standing with their planes at right angles to a rectangle.
In Figs. 3, 4, and 5 the two triangularteeth are seen at a b as arranged parallel to one another and standing with their planes perpendicular to a rectangular or base part c. Now, it is not necessary that these teeth should be precisely triangular, as they may bear approximately to such form nor is it necessary that the base to which they are united should be rectangular, as it may be made square. Teeth thus formed are to be linserted through a strip of leather or other suitable flexible material in asimilar manner to which the common card-teeth are inserted, the broad plate base part of each tooth being brought close up against the under side ot' the. same, as seen in Figs. l and 2.
When card-teeth are made simply of Wire, the base of such teeth aii'ords little or no support to them, it operating principally to prevent them from being drawn out of the leather while the card is in operation.
The broad base of my improved teeth resting on the substance or surface to which the iilletin g is fastened, and also against the sheet of leather through which the teeth are passed, forms a strong support for the teeth not only against longitudinal but against lateral strain brought to bear upon them; besides, giving to each tooth a triangular form, or making it of a sheet of metal, imparts to it great strength and renders it particularly useful in carding coarse material.
I would remark that I do not claim to make card-teeth of wire; but v that I do claim as my invention is- The making of each two teeth and the base thereof of a metallic plate formed and bent Asubstantially in the manner as hereinbefore described.
In testimony whereof I `have hereunto set my signature this 5th day of December, A. D. 1853.
V. MONTGOMERY.
