Description
- UNITED STATES PATENT OEFIC.
RICHARD MONTGOMERY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CORRUGATE'D BEAM.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 13,599, dated September 25, 1855.
To all 10h-0m t may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD MONTGOM- ERY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Beams; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
A patent, dated July 12th, '1853, was granted to me, as assignor to Elizabeth Montgomery, for an improvement in sheet metal beams; which improvement consisted principally in forming a beam of sheet metal of uniform thickness bent into a series of longitudinal folds, the sides of which are Hat and parallel, and the tops and bottoms inverted and uninvertedarches. I have since discovered that beams of the same weight are much stronger when made of sheets of such a shape that one or both series of the arches shall be thicker than the straight portions of the said beams, as represented in the accompanying drawing. I am of the opinion that it will be best t0 so shape the sheet metal that one or both series of arches shall be about double the thickness of the straight portions of said beams; but I do not intend to limit myself to any precise difference of proportion between the curved and the straight portions of my improved beams.
IVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A supporting beam formed of sheet metal of unequal thickness bent into a series of folds, substantially as represented in the accompanying drawing and herein set forth.
