WRENCH.
' "Specification ofLette'rs raft-lit) Application filed August 5, 1913. Serial No. 783,176.
To all whom it may concern} Be it known that I, THOMAS CALDWELL, a citizen of the United States of America, re.-' siding at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have mvented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had theref in to the accompanying drawing.
This invention .relates to wrenches, and the objects of my invention, are, first, to provide a quick acting wrench that has a novel adjustable jaw; second, to provide a nut wrench that has the operating mechanism thereof concealed whereby the wrench is not liable to injury by ordinary use; third,
to provide a wrench having an adjustable jaw that can be shifted in one direction without operating the mechanism of said wrench, and fourth, to provide a strong and durable ,wrench consisting of comparatively few parts that are inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble and highly efficient for the purposes for which they are intended.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts constitutes a handle and the outer end there- Slidably mounted upon the shank 1 is an adjustable jaw body 5 having the front side thereof provided with a jaw 6 presenting a Patented Au 11,1914.
flat gripping surface 7 that confronts and cooperates with the gri ping surface 3 of the'jaw .2. The rear si eef the jaw body 5 has a rectangular openingS and pivotally mounted in said opening bya transverse pin 9 is a pawl 10 for engaging the ratchet teeth 4: ofthe shank 1. The pawl 10 has anarm 11 that is engaged by a fiat compression spring 12 secured by. a screw 13 or other fastening means to' the rear side or the jaw body 5. This compression spring holds the pawl 10 normally-in engagement with the teeth 4 of the shank 1. v The rear side of the adjustable jaw body 5 is stepped, as at 14 and secured to the rear side of said jaw body and closing the opening 8 is a detachable plate 15 that is held'in engagement with the jaw body 5 by screws or other fastening means. Centrally of the plate 15 is an opening 16' and slidably mounted in said opening is a push pin 17 that has the inner end thereof provided with a rounded detachable head 11- that engages the arm 18 The head 11 also prevents the push pin" from becoming accidentally displaced relatively to the plate 15. By pushing inwardly upon the pin 17 the pawl 10 can be shifted out of engagement with the shank 1, whereby the jaw 6 can be opened relatively to the jaw 2 To vclose the jaw 6 it is only necessary to pushthe jaw body 5 toward the outer end of the shank.
One embodiment'jof my invention has been illustrated, but it is to be understood that the structural elements. are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim. What I claim is A wrench comprising a shank having a fixed jaw and a toothed rear edge, ajaw body 'slidably mounted on the shank and having its rear side stepped and arranged with an opening, a pawl pivotallymounted in the opening of the jaw-body for engaging the teeth of the shank and having-an arm, an inset plate formedtm-the rear side of the jaw body and having-a pocket, a flat compressionspring extending into said pocket and secured tothe jaw body and ex- 'a screw passing through said plate for setending in said openings to engage said arm curing the same to the jaw body.
for maintaining the pawl in engagement In testimony whereof I aflix my signature with said teeth, a push pin mounted in said in the presence of two witnesses.
5 plate and having a head at its inner and THOMAS CALDWELL.
outer plate. and the inner head being-capa- Witnesses: ble of engaging said arm for shifting the MAX H. SROLOVITZ, pawl against the action of the spring and HENRY C. EVERT.
