Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 4t, 1914.
"Application filed July 23, 1913. Serial No. 780,833.
Indiana, have invented certain new and use ful Improvement/sin Ratchet-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawlngs.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches, and more particularly to a ratchet Wrench, and the "primary object of the invention resides in providing a wrench 10f this character which may be quickly and readily applied to use and which may be effectively operated with a minimum amount of energy onthe part of the operator.
A still further object of the invention resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is aplan view of the device complete. Fig. 2 is an elevation thereof showing the handle or shank member in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical section as Seen on line 3+3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is ahorizontal section as seen online 4%; Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a similar view as seen on line 5+5, Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a bottom plan.
a view of the rotatable disk member removed.
indicates a shank or handle member of elongated design, one end of which is curved or bent arcuately to form a spanner 2 that terminates inaneye 3. The other end of the shank .lhas an annular chambered head 4 formed thereon provided with a central opening 5. Mounted in the head 4, is a socket embodying a disk 6 having centrally disposed bosses 7 and 7 formed thereon extending from the opposite faces thereof.
The boss 7 extends to a greater distance beyond the disk 6 than the boss 7, the bore of the socket as a whole being polygonal.
Fitting over the open end of the head 4, is a plate 8 which has a central opening therein to loosely receive the boss 7 and lugs or the like 9 formed on the peripheral edge of the plate 8 are adapted to register with similar lugs 10 formed on the peripheral edge of the head 4:, whereby screws 11 may be inserted through the series of lugs to secure the plate to the head and thus retain the socket in position therein.
Formed on one face of the head 4 and projecting outwardly therefronnare the tubular teats 12, and arranged in each of theteats is a coil spring 13. Also mounted in the teats 12 hearing against the coil springs 13, are pawls 14:, the outer ends 15 of which are beveled. One face of the disk 6 has a circularly arranged. series of inclined ratchet teeth 16 formed therein and arranged to be engaged by the pawls 1 f. From this construction it will be seen that the pawls 14- are normally in contactwith the ratchet teeth 16 so that whenthe head 4 is turned in. one direction the socket will be turned therewith, andwhen the head is turned in the opposite direction, the pawls 14 will readily ride over the inclined teeth 16 and have no effect whatsoever on the socket so far as the turn ing of the same is concerned.
Thiswrench is particularly adapted for use in connection with fire plugs, wherein it is necessary to remove the cap in order to attachthc hose. It will be seen that with a device of this character, the capmay be quickly and readily removed from the plug willbe Very efficient and useful in operation.
WVhile I have particularly described the elements best adapted toperform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in :the
A Wrenchcomprising a shank, an annularchamberedhead projecting laterally therefrom and provided with a plurality of tubu- I 10 lar teats, the outer ends of Which are closed and the inner ends of ,Whichopen intov the chamber of the head, coiled springs arranged in the teats, pawls disposed in the teats and projecting above the inner Wall of the head,
a socket disposed Within the head and hav- 15 1' I ing a disk furnished on one side with ratchet teeth to be engaged by the pawls; and a plate fitting around one endof the socket andisecured to the head.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my 20' signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
