Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9, 1914.
Renewed December 1, 1913. Serial No. 804,115.
To all "whom it may concern Be it known that I. Enwnnn H. Rose, a. citizen of the United States, residing at lilint, in the county of Genesce and State of liflichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Batchet-"li renches of which the following is a specification, retcrence being had to the accompanying draw ings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ratchet wrenches, the ob ject oi? the invention being to simplify and improve the construction of such implements and produce a device of this character which may be quickly reversed without moving the same from the nut or other object being actuated.
Another object of the invention is to provide av device of this character which will possess advantages in points of etliciency and durability is inexpensive to manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation the retaining plate being removed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line (a -s of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the handle of the wrench having an annular head 2 formed at one end thereof which is arranged with a centrally arranged circular opening 3. Arranged within the opening 3 in the head 2 is a ratchet wheel at having two series of teeth 5 and 6 formed upon the intermediate portion thereof and disposed. in opposite directions. The ratchet wheel l is provided with a nut receiving opening 4, it being understood that this opening may be formed in various sizes or a number of ratchet wheels may he provided with each wrench, each wheel having an opening of different size so that various sizes of nuts and other objects may be manipulated with the same wrench. Formed upon each side of the portions which are adapted to be arranged in the circular openings 8 formed in the metallic plates 9 arranged upon each side of the head 2, said plates being held securely in place by means of the screw bolts 10.
Formed within each face of the head 2 and arranged at opposite sides thereof are the recesses 11 which are adapted to communicate with the central opening 3. Mounted within the recesses 11 for sliding movement are the pawls 12 which are adapted to engage the teeth 5 and 6. Secured to the outer periphery of the head. 2 as shown at 13 are the leaf springs 14 which are arranged within the inwardly extending grooves 15. the inner ends of said grooves communicating with the recesses 11. The inner ends of the springs 14L are disposed within the recesses 16 formed in the pawls and are adapted to normally hold said pawls into engagement with the ratchet wheel. The inner ends of the grooves 15 are provided with an enlargement 1.7 to permit a free movement of the inner ends of the springs upon the reciprocation of the pawls 12.
Pivotally secured in the outer faces of the pawls 12 are the arms 18. the outer ends of which are turned outwardly and disposed at right angles to the body portion as shown at 19. The outwardly turned ends 19 are arranged within the recesses 20 formed in the plates 9 and are adapted to engage within the notches 21, when it is desired to re lease the pawls from engagement with the teeth and 6. Thus in order to disengage one oi. the pawls from one side of the ratchetwheel, the outwardly turned end of one of the arms is pulled out and engaged within the recess 21, thus allowing the wheel to be turned freely in one direction and in or der to release the wheel so that the same ay be turned freely in an opposite direction. the pawl on the opposite face of the head is disengaged from the opposite set of teeth. It will be apparent that the ratchet wheel is held against rotation in either direction when both pawls are in engagement with both sets of teeth.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent that l have provided a simple and durable ratchet wrench ratchet wheel 4 are the circular bearing l which can be quickly and readily operated,
is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
While I have shown and described, the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of constructions and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim is:-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a handle having an annular head, a ratchet wheel rotatably mounted therein, and provided with two series of oppositely disposed teeth, plates arranged upon each side of said head, spring pressed pawls arranged upon opposite sides of the head and adapted to engage the teeth on the ratchet wheel, HI'JCS having one of their ends pivotally secured to said pawls and having their other ends extending outwardly at right angles to the body portion said plates being provided with recesses within which the outwardly turned ends of the;
cent the recess to receive the outwardly turned ends and retain the pawls from engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a handle having an annular head, plates arranged upon each side of the head, a ratchet wheel having two series of oppositely disposed teeth arranged within. the head, spring pressed pawls arranged upon opposite sides of the head and adapted for reciprocatory movement to engage the teeth of the ratchet, arms having one of their ends pivotally secured to the pawls and having their other ends extending outwardly at right angles to the body portion said plates being provided with re cesses within which the outwardly extending ends are arranged, said plates being further provided with recesses arranged adjacent the first recesses and within which the outwardly extending ends are arranged to disengage the pawls from the teeth of the ratchet, so that either one or both of the ratchets may be disengaged from the teeth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
