To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL C. HORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is aspecification.

My invention relatesto improvements in boxes and its principal object. is to secure a bottle holding box which will be convenient for packing and shipping, easy to handle, readily sealed against opening and provided with a cover which can not be removed fromthe box and will yet be convenient in form. This box is fitted with hand holes for lifting and carrying, and, as it is desir-. able to keep certain liquors in the dark, sliding covers are provided for the hand holes which may be closed when the boxes are in storage. One of the principal advantages of my box is the foldable cover which on being opened, drops down beside the box and out of the way.

I have illustrated one form of my device in the accompanying drawings which form part of my specification and of whichl igure 1 is a perspective of my improved box Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the center of the box; Fig. 3 is an enlarged section showing the lock; Fig. 4 is a front view of the seal, and Fig. 5 is a section showing the hand hole and its cover.

In the above drawing A is a box of the ordinary size for holding a dozen bottles and having ends2 and sides 3 and 1. Each of the ends 2 of the box is formed with a groove 5 on its inner side adapted to receive a longitudinal sliding cover B to close the box. Near the top of each end on the center line of the box is an ordinary slot or hand hole (Sby means of which the box can be picked up and carried. On the inside of each end 2 immediately above and below the hand hole 6 are pressed metal strips 7 forming grooves in which a strip of metal 8 may be slid over the hand hole. This sliding cover 8 is formed with an indent 9 near. one end, presenting a recess toward the outside of the box by means of which the cover may be slid ofi from over the hand hole allowing a man carrying the box to secure a hold upon the edge of the hand hole. The metal strips 7 may be formed integral with the ends or secured to the box in any suitable manner as by the screws 10. Within the box is a rack 11 for holdingbottles. A. cover formed of hinges 1 1, is fitted to the grooves 5 in the ends 2 of the box A.. The part 12 of the cover,which lies nearest the front side 30f the box is relatively narrow and is adapted to remain upon the box and prevent the re moval of the entire cover from it. This is secured by a stop 15 attached to the underside ofthe cover 12 by screws 16 or other suitable means and is fitted to. prevent the cover from being removed from the grooves two pieces 12 and 13 fastened together by.

The narrow portion 12, of the cover is reinforced upon its upper side by a strip 17 which prevents the breaking down of the edge of the cover and raises it to a level with the top line 18 of the ends and front side of the box. The folding portion 13 of the cover is also fitted with a reinforcing strip 19 which is placed at its back edge thus giving a paneled effect to the top of the box when closed.

On the under side of the cover 12 at the center of its length is a spring metal catch 20 formed with a shoulder 21 and attached to the cover 12 by screws 22 or in any suitable manner. The shoulder 21 is fitted to snap over a shoulder 23 in an aperture 24': in the front wall 3 of the box when the cover B is in its closed position. The shoulder 23 is formed with a metal plate 25 or in any suitable manner and is provided with a metal tongue 26 againstwhieh. the shoulder 21. drops when in its closed position. Inthe tongue 26 and the shoulder 21 are corresponding openings 27 and 28 through which.

The aperture 2 1 is closed on the outside by a hinged metal cover 31 pivoted on a screw 32 and having a hook 33 fitted to engage a pin 841 to hold the strikes the wall 4 of the box. The part 13 of the cover then extending backward, swings down upon the hinges 14 beside the box making it convenient to pack in its open position.
