Description

G. MAYS.
OAR PUSHER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.10,1914.

CHARLES MAYS, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-PUSHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 28, 1914.
Application filed January 10, 1914. Serial No. 811,485.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES Mays, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Pushers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in car pushers and resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the fOllOWll'lg' specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating the improvement arranged upon a rail and in the act of operating upon a car wheel, a portion of the handle being shown in section, Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the improvement, Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same, and Fig. l: is a perspective view of a slight modification.
In devices employed for pushing or propolling cars a short distance upon tracks, a downward force is applied, and this force, of course, is limited to the weight of the operator. Therefore, it is not unusual for a number of men to swing upon the bar of the pusher and thus add to the Weight deposited thereon for operating the device. It is, of course, well known that more power can be obtained from an upward push, as for instance, when the operator bends his body with his feet firmly upon the ground and permitting the operating bar or handle of the pusher either resting upon his shoulders or grasped by his hands and by straightening himself or exerting an upward push, and therefore, I propose to construct a car pusher which is operated upon this principle.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a car wheel and 2 the track upon which the wheel travels.
The numeral 3 designates my improvement in its entirety. The improvement in eludes a head 4, the same, in the preferred construction, comprising side plates 5 and an intermediate plate 6 which is arranged at the toe of the device between the side plates, and secured thereto in any desired or preferred manner. The toe portion of the body has its upper face beveled, as indicated by the numeral 7, and arranged between the plates 5 to the rear of the spacing plate or block 6 is a rectangular member 8 which is pivoted, as at 9, between the plates 5, and near the upper and rear corners of the plates. The fulcrum member 8 is provided with a rcarmu'dly extending stud 9 which is preferably rounded in cross section and which is adapted to receive either the ferrule upon an operating lever 10 or to receive the lower end of the said lever when the same is constructed from a tube.
The operation of the device is clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The shoe 4. has its too arranged between the rail and the wheel, the operating handle 10 is swung in an upward direction to bring the lower corner of the rectangular fulcrum member 8 into engagement with the rail, and as a consequence force the shoe a toward the Wheel to propel the wheel. A fresh grip is readily obtained by moving the handle 9 in a downward direction.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings, the device is substantiallv similar to that described, except the shoe 4' is formed from a single member, the intermediate or spacing plate 6 being dispensed with, and the fulcrum 8' is pivoted between the rearwardly extending arms 5' of the shoe.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the inventiomwhat I claim is:
1. In a device for the purpose set forth, a substantially rectangular shoe having a beveled corner forming a toe, the shoe to the rear of its toe having a central opening, a fulcrum member including a rectangular head pivoted within the opening of the shoe adjacent the upper corner thereof opposite the toe, whereby the said fulcrum member may be swung below the shoe, and a handle for the fulcrum member.
2. In a car wheel pusher, a shoe having a beveled corner comprising a toe which is adapted to be arranged against the tread of the car wheel, a fulcrum member pivotally In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 1n presence of two W1tnesses.
CHARLES MAYS.
connected to the shoe a handle for the fulcrum :member whereby the said fulcrum member may be rotated to bring one of its corners below the shoe in contact with the rail upon which the ear Wheel rests to force the toe of the shoe against the Wheel to move the said Wheel upon the rail.
Witnesses MARGARET CRAIG, MELVIN MAYS.
