SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,574, dated July 16, 1901.
f Application filed March 21, 1901- Scrial No. 52,177. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES R. KLIPPELT and HOWARD W. JEFFERS, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switch-Operating Mechanism; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a switch-operating mechanism.
The object of our invention is to provide a device whereby railway-switches may be operated from the car.
In the accompanying drawings we have illustrated our apparatus in several ways, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a section of track and switch having our improvements thereon. Fig. 2 is also a plan view with parts removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectionalvicw through the track on a line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a portion of the mechanism.
In the drawings the numerals 1 and 2 designate the track-rails, and 3 and 4 the switchrails, all of which are of the ordinary construction.
The numeral 5 designates a box-frame having a lid 6. This box and lid are placedin the road-bed in such a position that the boxlid will be on a level with the roadsbed. Pivotally riveted upon a boss 7 at the bottom of the box is the T-shaped lever 8, having arms extending therefrom in the form of a T, and is connected at its forked end with the switch-point 9 by a rod 10, said rod 10 being supported by lugs 11, which are found upon the bottom of the box. On the top of the lid are found the two pairs of inclined guidestops 12, between each pair of which is found an opening'l. Pivotally riveted within each of these openings is a cam-shaped trip 14 to engage the cross-bar of the T-shaped lever 8, one of said cams being elevated when the other is depressed. In this case the car-body 15 is provided with a pair of downwardly-extended spring-actuated pressure-rods 16, each of which is provided with a wheel 17 to engage the aforesaid cams 14 as the car passes over the road, one of these rods being placed in such position to be a little in advance of the other; As the car proceeds along the'track Aif the switch be closed the wheel 17, which is farthest in advance, enters between the strips or guides 12 and depresses the elevated cam-trip 14. .This cam-trip when depressed acts upon one of the arms of the T-shaped lever 8 and opens the switch, as indicated by dotted lines at Fig. 2.
By the use of this apparatus the motorman or conductor will not be required to leave the car, thus preventing loss of time.
Having thus fully shown and described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A switch-throwing mechanism comprising in combination with the platform of a car, the spring-actuated pressure-wheels carried thereby, a box with removable lid, said box being embedded between the track-rails, pins mounted in apertures in said lid, the angle trip-cams pivoted on said pins, the horizontally-mounted T-lever, and vertically-disposed pin on which the latter is pivoted, a switch-point and link connection between same and said lever, the free ends of said trip-cams adapted to contact with the rightu angled ends of said T- lever on either side of the shank portion of the lever, and the guidestrips along the marginal edges of the apertures in said lid, as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto affixed our signatures in the presence of two subscribin g witnesses.
