.ILINA INVENTOR /zZzImez' l -wITNEssEs= /v ATTI-)m l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTON KNEIP, OF MASPETH, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, AND JOHN J. REED, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
RAI LROAD-SWITCH.
SPECIFICATION forming lpart of Letters Patent No. 513,944, dated January 30, 1894.
' Application filed October 12, 1893. Serial No. 487,986. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON KNEIP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maspeth, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Switches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in railroad switches by which the switch can be conveniently actuated from the car as setV forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure I is a plan view of the switch. Fig. 2 is a section along m Fig. l'. Fig. 3 is a section along yy Fig. l. Fig. 4 is asection along z c Fig. 1.
Ais the main line or rails switching oi into branches A- A2, and B is the switch which when in the position shown in full lines leads onto branch A' and in the position shown in dotted lines ontobranch A2. The switch B is set by arm or slide C having a depending prong D. As one side or the-other of prong D is struck by the heads E the slide C is moved to shift the switch one way or another. The heads E are connected to levers F fulcrumed at G and having their end portions formed or bent into tappets H extending upward above the ground so that when the inclined face I carried by rod K strikes a tappet H the lever F is actuated. The rod K is convenientlyformed as a treadle depressed into working position against the action of spring L by the foot of the attendant standing on the car or platform M. Each car can have two rods K for the two levers F or each car can have but one rod K actuating one of the levers F so as to set the switch correctly for each particular car.
The tappets I-I are made to extend into grooves N in a cover or protecting plate O said plate having its Yupper surface raised or placed at such height that the tappets cannot rise above said upper surface so that a cart or other object passing over the plate cannpt strike the tappets and thus accidentally actuate the switch while the treadle K has its actuating face of such width as to readily enter a groove N to act on a tappet.
The prong D is shown with oppositely inclined faces, and the levers F are adapted to act respectively on the opposite faces of the prong, each lever having its head provided with an inclined face so as to secure ready sliding of the head along aface of the prong.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with aswitch, of a slide connected to the switch, a prong projecting downwardly from said slide and provided with oppositely inclined. faces, and pivoted actuating levers arranged on opposite sides of the prong, each of said levers being provided at one end with a head having an inclined face adapted to strike the adjacent face of the prong and at its other end with a tappet adapted to be operated from the car, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a switch, of a slide connected to the switch, a wedge-shaped prong projecting downwardlyv from said slide, and actuating levers arranged upon each side of said prong and pivoted between their ends, each of said levers being provided at one end with a head having an inclined face adapted to strike the adjacent face of the prong and at its other end witha tappet adapted to be operated from'the car, substantially as described.
3. The combination of aswitch,a slide connected thereto, a wedge-shaped prong projecting downwardly from said slide, and actuating levers arranged on opposite sides of said prong, each of said levers being provided at one end with a head having an inclined face adapted to strike the adjacent face of the prong and at its other end with a tappet adaptedv to be operated from the car, said levers being fulcrumed near the ends opposite the heads, whereby said heads are normally held depressed by gravity and the tappets maintained elevated, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANTON KNEIP.
