Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21,1914.
Application filedAprfl 10, 1914. Serial No. 530,894.
- useful improvements in printing-press rolls and is fully described and explained in the specification and shown in the accompanving drawings, in which: I
Figure 1 is a longitudinal'section through my improved device; Fig. 2 isan elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4.- is a perspective view of one ofthe clamping-brackets, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the sliding-blocks and bolt.
Referring to the drawings, 6 is a cylindrical roll in the periphery. of which are milled slots 7, each of which is narrowed in its outer margin so that each slot is in T- shaped cross-section with its head inward. The slots are preferably milled in a spiral direction, as shown. Outside of the roll are placed a number of rings 8. These rings are .used in sufficient numbers to buildup an enlarged surface on the roll as large or slightly larger than the electrotype which it is desired to use for printing. By varying the number of the rings, the size of the enlarged section can be varied at will. The rings are preferably provided with dowels 9 and with holes to register therewith so that the composite enlarged section possesses the desired solidity. I I 10 is the electrotype-plate which overlies the rings, as shown. The electrotype-plate is held in position upon the rings by clamps, such as that shown in Fig; ,4, each of which has a downwardly-projecting end 11 engaging the roll, a horizontal Web 12, a vertical Web 13, and an overhanging lip 14 which engages the electrotype-plate. In the milled slots are blocks 15, each of which has an enlarged lower part and an upwardly-projecting reduced part, and these blocks are secured by bolts 16 to the clamps.
The description of the structure will of course make plain the mode of operation. The structure is advantageous in that'the five cents'each, by addressing the Washington, D. 0." I 1 roll has the enlarged section upon which the M electrotype-plate rests, thereby providing a comparatively large space wherein the clamp may lie without interfering with the paper being printed upon. "Qwin to this large' space, the clamp can be ma e heavy, and it may besecured in place by a heavy .bolt,
whereas in prior structures. of. which I am aware the electrotype-plate has been placed very close to the main surface of the roll so thatthe clamp which was to engage there- I with and the bolt or screw which held the 1 I order to clear the surface printed upon, as
clamp ,in place hadto be so sma'llin size, in
to make it necessarily weak in structure.
I reahze that OOIlSldGIflblQ'VfiIlfil' lOh 1s possible in. the details of the construction herein shown, and .I donot intend to limit myself thereto, except as pointed out in the following claims,-in which'it is my intention to claim all the novelty inherent in the de-' vice as-broadly as is-permitted'by the state of the art.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A' printing-roll having an enlarged part to receive an electrotype, and'reduced parts at the ends thereof, slots'witlnoverhanging margins in the reduced parts-of the roll,
blocks therein, clamps overlying the reduced parts of the roll and overhanging. the enlarged part to engage an electrotype thereon, and bolts engaging the clamps with the blocks in the slots.
2. A printing-roll having, in combination, a series of rings forming anenla rged part of adjustable size to receive and support an electrotype, and a reduced part on-whichsaid ring is fitted, the reduced partbeing provided with slots having overhang ng margins, blocks in the slots, clamps whose tips overhangtlie' enlarged part of the roll to engage'an elcctrotype thereon, and bolts purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof Ijhave hereunto set my hand this 7th day of April, 1914.
WILLIAM MACGOWAN."
