CONFEC'I'IONERY-BOX.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1914.
Application filed November 18, 1912. Serial No. 731,999.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER C. CAnLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Confectionery- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in confectionery boxes.
The object of my invention is to provide a box having a plurality of compartments, one or more being superposed above another and the upper compartments being connected to the one below in such a manner that they may be lifted and swung outwardly without disconnecting them, and when so swung outwardly the walls of the lower compartment will cooperate with the connecting means in supporting the upper compartment or compartments in a horizontally extended position. Regard is also had for symmetry, stability and compactness.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view with one of the upper compartments in an extended position and the other one par-- tially extended, and its full extended position indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is aside elevation with one compartment wholly, and another compartment partially, extended, and with dotted lines indicating two other positions of the upper compartments, 2'. e. in folded and full open position respectively. Fig. 3 is a view showing an elevation of the compartments in folded position and an inclosing cover in vertical section.
Like parts are identified by the same reference characters throughout the several views.
The lower compartment 1 has a bottom extended to form a base flange 2, adapted to receive the margin of the cover 3. The compartments l and 5 are superposed upon the compartment 1, each being preferably of the width and height of the lower compartment but one-half its length. A pair of parallel links 7 and 8 connect each side of each upper compartment with the respective sides of the one below. These links preferably comprise flat bars or bands connected by pivot pins or eyelets 10, the entire structure, except the pivot pins, being preferably of card board. The links are connected with the upper compartment walls near their inner margins, and with the lower compartment walls near their outer margins. The
connection of each linkis such that when the boxes are in folded position, the links extend downwardly and outwardly from the upper compartment pivots, and when the boxes are in extended position, the links will extend downwardly and inwardly; The links are also so proportioned in length, and so connected that when the boxes move to extended position, the inner marginal portions of their bottom members will bear upon the respective end walls of the bottom compartment and. said walls will then cooperate with the links in holding the boxes in a horizontally extended position in the same plane which they occupy when folded, but with substantially the whole interior of the compartment exposed.
It will be observed that when the upper compartments 4 and 5 are in an intermediate position they are raised above their normal plane in either folded or open position. This prevents a sliding or scraping movement of the upper compartments upon the contents of the lower one. The connection of each of the lower pivot pins 10 with the compartment 1 is preferably substantially mid-way between the positions of upper pivot pin which connects the same bar with the upper compartment in its two positions of closed and full open extension. The cover 3 is of suflicient dimensions to cover the upper and lower compartments when in folded position, its sides being twice the height of one compartment in the construction shown.
Owing to the cooperative action of the pairs of links with the end wall of the compartment 1, the upper compartments will require no additional support when extended, except for very large or heavily loaded compartments. But, if desired, the end walls of the upper compartments may be provided with depending legs or a flange 15 which fits against the end wall of compartment 1 when in folded position. The side walls of compartment 1 project slightly beyond the end walls and are adapted to receive the flanges 15 between them.
I claim A confectionery box, comprising the combination of a base compartment having ex tended side and bottom walls, a pair of superposed compartments having a combined bottom area equal to that of the base and normally covering the base with their inner walls in approximate contact, a pair of links on two sides of each upper compartment, pivoted thereto and also pivoted to the base at points intermediate of the ends of the base and below the connections with the upper con'ipartment, said links being of such length as to permit an extension of each of the upper compartments to a position with the inner marginal portion of its bottom supported upon the upper margin of the lower compartment, and lapping over and partially covering the lower compartment, flanges depending from the outer wall of each upper compartment normally received between the end margins of the side walls of the base and adapted-t0 cooperate with the base 111 supporting the upper compartments 1n extended position, and a cover adapted to inc-lose all the compartments WALTER G. CARLSON.
