TAG-AS'IENER T all wk0m z't may ooncem Be it known that I, DENNY EDMUND VALSI-IE, a citizen of the United S@ates f merica, residing at Grund. Sahne, in the county 0f Van Zandt, in the State 0f Texas,
have invented certain new zm i useful Im-.
provements in Tag-Fasteners, whereof the following is a speification. y
This invention relates to tag fetsteners designed to be especially usa ful in la1ge mercantile establishments conducting a mail orderbusiness in which a great multipli'city 0f packages are prepared f0r Inailing by parcel post er ofherwise.
The objeci; 0f the invention is to provide 5 tag faslbener of simple construction and trifling cost, which can be appiied t0 the package with grea.t rapidity and which will not easily become detached therefrom,- thus economizing time -of the ma'il order ship ping clerks and insuring saf8ty in the delivery of the packag9.
Figure 1 f the accompanying drawings represents a perspective view cf a package 130 which a tagis secured by thisimprovec tag fastener. Fig. 2 represe1nts aLn enlarged side elevation of a tag fastener embodying one form 0f this invention showing aisection of the tag attached at one end and a section of the bmding cord 0f the package at nhe other end. gFig. 3 represents a side elemision of this improved tag in the first stage '0f the operati0n of hooking the fastener to the binding cordof a package, t-he loop'ed hook o:f the faste ner entering under said eo"r. Fig'. 4 represents a side elevation thereof in which the' 100 ed hook of the fastener is m cf Fig. 1 ancl ex'dag'1tedto contain'gn v01ce 01 the content3} 0f13h8 paclgage', The same leference' numbers mdicate co1v respoxlding Parts throughbv the difiemrent lower side, a tag loop 13 at its inner end in- This tag fastener 10 is compbsed 0f flat steel Wire in one piede, said wire having more 01: less resilienee.
This-fastener comprises a shank 11 .along its upper side, a, springtongue 12 along it s tegral With said shank and tongue and a looped hook 15 ab its outer end integral with said shank and adapted to engage the bindmg cord of the package. This looped hook 15 is formed by a primary return bend 16 forming a continuation Cf and Patentleiciii, 19.14,
a sedondz'zry return bend 17 foi%mir1ga c0ntinuation of the returxi band 16.- This 100j ed hook is disposed adjacent to the spring tongue 12 and projects laterally beyond said tongue. The secondary return bend is disposed 0n an incline and forms a looped bil1 which is at an acute angle t0 the shank and adapted t0 pass readily under a 'package binding cord in the normal p0sition in Which t-he tag fastener is grasped as indicated in Fig.. 3. The end 01 the secondary return -bend 17 is preferably folded -forming a reinfdrced tip 18. The free end of the spring tongue 12 rests normally againsi; the tip 18 of the looped hook 15 and yields automatically to permit the entrance of the fastening cords and acts as a lock against accidentd release thereof.
This tag fastener is designed to be abt2 zcl 1ed to an address tag 20 or other tag by passing the tongue 12 through the reinforced eyelet 21 0f said tagf and hanging the tag in the loop 13. The reinforced eyelet of the taig is prefembly provided with a squa1e opening 22. These 33W0 parts arte designed 'to be united ab the factory and seid together. as an article 0f manufacture.
An envelop tag 30 adapted t0 contain am ihvoice *or other papers and provided With a. reinforced eyelet 21 may be substituted for the tag 20.. T he flattened wire in C011- nection with the square opening 0f the reinforcecl eyelet tends 130 maintain the tag in -proper position 011 thepfackage.
" In the use 0f this invention, the package pr'iried with a, binding cord 50 which is preferably passed around said package in diflernt irections forming an intefsecting junction 51., The pa ckage thus prepared is grasped.in 011a band and. the tag 20 Q1 30 be&ping the address and carryir 1g the tag fa'stener 10 is grasped in the other band. The looped hook 15 is then brought into c'ontact with the over 01 covering 015 the package 40 -somewhat in adxmnce o'f thc; binding cord 50, preferablj' adjacent t0 the junction 51.0f said cord. Then the haaml holding the wg and its 'fast-ener is given quick jerk backvvard and the 100 30d h0ok 15 passes under said cord 51 which is adjacent to and extends laterally beyon the spring tongue 12, said cord first riding over the re turn band 17 of said hook as shown in Fig. 3,
thence u'nder the'spring tongue 12, automati ca1ly lifti'ng the latter aftr its. engagementwith said hook as shown.inFig. 4, and the 1me passing into the loop of said loopedhooka's tener ams shown in Fig. l.
It is thus apparent thz'zt hunreds and' thousa1ncls 0f address tags can be appliedjto packages by the aid of this fastener m'a.
very short time. I claim as my invention:
A tag fastener composed of Wire in one piece and comprisin a shank forming one' side 0-f the fastener, a spring 'tongue formin'g the opposite side thereof, a ta 100 and a looped hook adjacent .to a nd extendform 1ng a contmuat1on 0f sa1d shan an tongue laherally beyond saidjton e and adm- -pmse9cl*ofn2n primary ;return e nd integral 1Wifihthe opposite epd ofsaid sh;i1ik-n a DENNY. IEDMUND WALSHE.
