To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Brennan H. UHR- BROOK, a'citizen of the United States, re
siding at Towson, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wire- Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wire clamps such as are used for holding together the loose ends of wires while being spliced together or for other purposes.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device whereby the loose ends of wires of a known or predetermined gage may be securely held together while being operated on. i
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and effective device of the class described comprising two jaw members having handles whereby they may be manipulated, means being provided for adj ustment of the connecting means of the jaw members, whereby said jaw members will be adapted to grip and hold securely wires of predetermined gage when the handle members of the jaws are in alining position.
- 'Afurther object of the invention is to produce an implementof the character de scribed in which one of the jaw members may be provided with a detachable cutting or scoring member for the purpose of scoring or nicking one of the wires held by the implement to enable it to be readily severed when desired.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consis'ts in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifiing cations within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a top plan view of an implement constructed in accordancewith the invention, a portion of the upper jaw member having been broken away. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 3'is a longitudinal sectional View taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view taken on the line 44 in Fig. 1.

The upper and lower jaw members, so designated for convenience only, it being obvious that the relative position of said jaw members depends altogether on the position in which the tool is held, consist of disks 15, 16" having radially extending handles designated, respectively, by 17 and 18. The disks or jaws, which are preferably approximately circular in shape, are provided with central apertures 19, 20, for the passage of a connecting bolt 21 having a nut 22 inset in the external face of the seen in Fig. 2 of the drawing, may be of regular polygonal shape, the recess or socket 24.- being correspondingly shaped so that by unscrewing the member 15 having the inset nut 22, the head 23 may be partly turned about the axis of the bolt and then reseated in the socketor recess 24:; The inner or working face of the lower jaw member 16 is roughened so it will take a firm hold on a wire or other substance inserted between the face of the jaws when'said jaws are moved toward each other. The inner face of the lower jaw member 16' is also provided with a transverse groove or recess 25 wherein may be seated a cutting member 26 for the purpose of notching or scorthe end of a wire which may be. placed across said cutting member, when it shall be desired to do so, in order that the end held and so on.

Let it be assumed that in a certain position of the parts the handles 17 18 of the jaw, members 15, 16 extend in alinemeiit with each other, as seen in Fig. 1. It follows that by rotating the bolt in the proper direction about its axis, the jaw members will gradually be moved apart from each other. Means being provided consisting of the polygonal head 23 engaging the socket 24L forfi retaining the bolt in various positions, it follows that in various predetermined; positions of the bolt head, the opposed faces of the jaws will be variously spaced. apart, and these various positions, the number. of which will correspond with the number of faces and angles of the bolt head, are calculated to, vary according to the gage of various wires, so that, for example, in one position of the bolt head a .wire of held tightly between the faces of the jaws when the handles l7, 18 are in alinement; in the next position a wire of a different gage,-s here indicated as No. 10 will be so In view of the fact that in some wire gages the intervals of the gage are not uniform, but irregular,'the indicia 6 to 11, inclusive, seen in Fig. 2 of the drawing, are to be regarded as merely con ventional and illustrative, the said indicia being shown, as beingv equally spaced apart.

'Having thus described the invention, what .is claimed as new, is':
1. A wire clamp comprising opposed jaw members, each having a radial'handle member, and a connecting bolt, said bolt having a head inset in one jaw;member and a nu inset in the other jaw member. No. 9 gage will be clamped and a head inset in one jaw member and a nut inset in the other jaw member; the bolt head being of non-circular shape. and the jaw member in which it isinset being c'onstructed to retain the bolt head securely at various predetermined axial adjustments.
