H. R. WOLFE.
SAW SWAGE.
Patented Aug. 11; 1885.
I .ZZEJV'EJZZHEF 114W 6?. aw
" NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARVEY It. WOLFE, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO BRENNAN 85 00. SOUTH WESTERN AGRICULTURAL WVORKS AND CHARLES A. WOLFE,
BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
SAW-SWAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,996, dated August 11, 1885.
Application filed June 3, i885. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY It. WOLFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Swages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of saw-swages especially adapted to circular, gang, and band saws, and is an improvement upon the swaging machine for I 5 which I received Letters Patent No. 315,164,
dated April 7, 1885.
It has for its object the production of a handswagewhich is simple in construction, strong, and efficient.
The novelty of the invention will be herein set forth, and distinctly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view showing the clamping-jaws applied to a saw as in the act of swaging. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the male tool in position. Fig. 3 represents one of the adjustable clamping-jaws removed. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the male tool.
The same letters of reference are used to indicate identical parts in all the figures.
A is any suitably-constructed forked carrier, provided for convenience with a handle, B, and having on each side of its forked arms cylindrical recesses c, to receive the clampingjaws C. These latter fit snugly in said recesses, and are provided with heads or flanges 1), whose adjacent edges are beveled, as shown at 0, thereby providing the female swagingdies, as will be presently explained. One of the recessed arms is extended, as seen at d, and is provided with a threaded perforation to receive a thumb or clamping screw, D, whose inner end bears against the end of the 45 jaw 0 within its recess, as seen in Fig. 1. By
' arms, and the clamping-screw I),all construct loosening this screw the jaws may be thrown apart sufficiently to slip over the saw-tooth in the proper position for swaging, whereupon by tightening up the screw the jaws will be tightly clamped upon the tooth, as will be readily understood. By beveling the edges of the jaws O the tapering V-shaped recess referred to in my former patent is provided, and by having the jaws circular and free to be turned in their recesses an almost infinite number of adjustments can bemade to compensate for wear under the blows of the male die. This latter is any suitable hand-tool, E, having its lower end tapered, as at c, Fig. 4, to fit the bevel of the clamping-jaws, and provided with one or more notches, f, to fit over the point of the saw-tooth, as seen in Fig. 2. The operator,by blows of a hammer upon the tool E,effects the upsetting or swaging of the tooth, as Will be readily understood.
The saw may be fastened in a vise, or the swaging may be done while the saw is secured to its arbor in the machine.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim- 1. In a saw-swage, circular revoluble toothclamping jaws having their adjacent edges beveled to form tapering swaging-recesses, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with circular revoluble tooth-clamping jaws having their adjacent edges beveled to form a taper recess, of a notched male die or tool so shaped as to fit into the aforesaid taper recess, substantially as described.
3. The forked carrier A,having the recessed arms, as shown, in combination with the circular revoluble tooth-clamping jaws, the stems of which are fitted into the recesses in the ed substantially as described.
