Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1914.
Application filed April is, 1914. Serial no. 832,828.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ANDREW STRZENOL of Erie and State of New York, have inventr ed certain new and useful Improvements in HatPin-Point Protectors, of which the following is a. specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to hat pin point protectors, and has for its object to provide a device of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, capable of being clasped upon. the pointed end of the pin for the purpose of inclosing the pointed end to prevent injury therefrom.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a hat pin point protector, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient and convenient in its use, readily set up, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is an elevation of a hat pin showing the adaptation therewith of a hat pin point protecting device in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section of the hat pin point protecting device, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the protecting device showing the same applied to the pointed end of a pin.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 4 denotes a pin shank, 5 a pointed end of the shank 6 and a head mounted upon the other end of the shank. The protecting device comprises a disk 7, formed with an oblong opening 8, and extending longitudinally of said opening is a shaft 9, with the ends of the latter seated in the disk 7 between the inner and outer faces 10 and 11 respectively of said disk 7. The end walls of the opening 8 are provided with grooves 12 for the purpose of positioning the shaft 9 and extending across the outer ends of the grooves ating members 19.
12 is a retaining member 13, which is of greater length than the opening 8, and is provided with right angularly disposed barbs 14, which are embedded in the disk 7 whereby the member 13 is maintained in position.
The reference characters 15 and 16 denote a pair of oppositely disposed gripping members, wedge-shaped in longitudinal section and having the opposed faces thereof plane and further formed centrally with longitudinally extending grooves 17. The gripping members 15 and 16 are fixedly secured by the holdfast devices 18 through a pair of spring controlled and pivotally mounted jaw oper- The aw operating members extend at an opposite inclination with respect to each other and each has its inner end inturned at right angles as at 21 and against which abuts a jaw member. The jaw members are of less length than the length of their operating members, and the said operating members extend through the openings .8. Each of the operating members is provided with a pair of inwardly extend-- ing apertured lugs 22, which are mounted upon the shaft 9. Surroundingthe shaft 9 and having the ends thereof engaging the inner faces of the jaw operating members,
is a coiled spring 23, the function of which I is to maintain the gripping members 15 and 16 in abutting engagement. The angleshaped ends 21 of the jaw operating members are grooved as at 22 and which form continuations of the groove 21.
The gripping members are adapted to have their grooves receive the pointed end 5 of the hat pin and the said gripping member will be maintained in frictional contact with the said pointed end through the action of the spring 23, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3, and when the gripping members are mounted upon the pointed end of the pin, it is obvious that no one can be injured thereby.
What I claim is 1. A hat pin point protecting device comprising a disk provided with an opening, a shaft arranged in said disk and extending across said opening, a retaining member extending across the opening and secured to the disk, a pair of spring controlled jaw opcrating members pivotally mounted upon lng one at each side of the shaft, and a pair of gripping jaws fixedly secured to said members.
2. A hat pin point protecting device comprising a disk provided with an opening, a shaft arranged in said disk and extending across said opening, a retaining member eX- tending aerossthe opening and secured to the disk, a pair of spring controlled jaw operating members pivotally mounted upon said shaft, said members being oppositely disposed and extending through said opening one at each side of the shaft, a pair of gripping jaws fixedly secured to said mem- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ANDREW STRZENCIWILK.
