Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1%, 1914:-
Application filed May 8, 1914. Serial No. 837,171
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. GREEN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Mingo Junction, county f Jefferson, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to pipe wrenches, and specifically to that type of pipe wrenches having a pivoted guide member in which the shank of the movable jaw is adjustably mounted. In the wrenches of this type heretofore employed the lower heel portions of the guide member, which are disposed at opposite sides of the wrench body, abut directly against plain frontfacing shoulders constituted by the front edges of upright post-like members which are formed integral with the wrench body on each side thereof. The great strains to which such wrenches are subjected in use tend to cause said heel portions to spread or spring apart, and, with continued use, said portions become so sprung that they pass by said shoulders and override the outer faces of said members, which results in breakage of the guide member at points adjacent to said heel portions.
The object of my invention is to provide means for preventing the heel portions of the guide from becoming sprung, or from spreading, thus obviating the frequent breakage of guides which results from use of the ordinary wrenches, as above explained.
The inventionresides in the features of construction which will hereinafter be fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an upper edge view of the same; and Figs. 3 and 4 are sections taken, respectively, on lines 3-3 and 47-41, Fig. 1.
Referring to said drawings, in which like designating characters distinguish like parts throughout the several views1 indlcates Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the the body, 2 the handle, 3 the fixed jaw, 4: the movable jaw, and 5 the pivoted yoke-like guide of a well-known type of pipe wrench. Formed on the opposite sides of the body 1 are integral outstanding members 6 which are of greater thickness than are the corresponding members of the common commercial wrenches of this type. The front edges of said members are provided with vertical recesses or grooves 7 in which the heel portions 5 of the guide 5 are received in abutting relation to inclosed shoulders 8, the forwardly project'ng heel-embracing flanges 6 serving to efiectually confine said heel portions to said grooves, preventing all tendency of said portions to spring outward or spread apart under any strains to which the wrench is subjected.
What is claimed is 1. In a wrench, the combination with a wrench body and a pivoted guide having separated heel portions, of outstanding members formed integral with the sides of said body, the front faces of said members being recessed to form inclosed shoulders against which said heel portions abut.
2. In a wrench, the combination with a wrench body and a pivoted guide having separated heel portions, of outstanding members formed integral with the sides of said body, the front faces of said members being provided with vertical grooves in which said heel portions are confined.
3. In a wrench, the combination with a wrench body and a pivoted guide having separated heel portions, of outstanding members formed integral with the sides of said body, the front faces of said members being provided with vertical grooves in which said heel portions are received behind forwardly extending embracing flanges.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT L. GREEN.
