Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J lily 14, 1914.
Application led August 18, 1913. Serial No. 785,394.
T 0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH MoL'rAn, a citizen of the United States, serving in the United StatesArmy, Troop I, Thirteenth Cavalry, at present stationed at Fort Riley, in the county of Geary and State of Kansas,
have invented a new and useful Improve ment in Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a readily attachable and removable holder adapted to hold table cloths, oil cloths or other coverings upon tables or benches, or covers upon mantel pieces, or paper upon a drawing board, or upon an easel, or the device may be employed in many other ways for holding various articles in place. The device is also adapted for use as will hereafter appear as part of a temporary coat or hat rack being readily attachable to the side of a shelf, mantel piece or the like.
The invention consists 1n the novel fea-k tures of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective View illustrating the device in position, a portion of a bench or table being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-*2 of Fig. l a locking bar being shown in dotted lines in one of its several positions. Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal section through the outer end portion of the device. Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are plan views of the blanks from which the body portions of the device are formed. Figs. 7 and 8 are detail plan views of certain locking devices.
With the exception of the wedge shaped locking devices shown in Figs. 7 and 8 the device consists of three separate parts adapted to be fitted together and the construction of these parts will be best understood by first describing the blanks shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6. The top member is formed from a blank A slightly enlarged and rounded at one end and having lateral extensions A at the opposite end, and said end portion is adapted to be bent at a right angle to the body portion of the blank while extensions A are also bent along the dotted lines for the purpose of forming guide ways. The bottom member is formed from a blank B having parallel tongues 5 at one end, one of which has its inner face toothed as indicated in the drawings, and the marginal side portions B2, of the blank B are bent over and then back upon the body portion thereof forming substantially a flat open sleeve, and the sides of said sleeve `are provided with longitudinal slots as indicated in the blank at B3. The locking lbar shown in Fig. 6 consists of a flat metal blank @suitably perforated near one end and a nut C may be soldered or otherwise secured upon one lface of the blank and in alinement with the perforation, or the nut may be formed upon the blank in the form of a boss with a threaded perforation therethrough.
The complete article itself after being suitably formed from the blanks above described consists of a top member l adapted to lie flat upon the top of the table cloth, a sheet of drawing paper, or other material to be fastened in position and .said member has its outer end bent to form a depending flange 2, which is` of greater width than the top member and the sides of said fiange are bent o-ver back upon the inner side as indicated at 3 to form guide ways, the member l 'being transversely slotted as shown at 3, said slot opening between the guide ways formed by the bent portions 3. A bottom member consists of an open flat sleeve 4 having at its outer end upturned tongues 5 which are adapted to enter the guide way formed by the members 3 0f the flange 2. The sides of theflat sleeve 4 are slotted as indicated at 6 and a hat locking bar 7 is adapted to slide into the inner end of the sleeve 4 as shown in Fig. l, or it may be passed through slot 6 s0 as to rest transversely across the sleeve as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. A suitable locking bolt in the form of a wing bolt 8 works through a nut 9 carried by the locking member 7 and bears upon the under surface of the table. In order to lock the top member l and the bottom sleeve member 4 together I employ the locking members l0 and ll as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, respectively, and the member ll is inserted in the slot 4 and is provided with teeth upon one side which mesh with the teeth upon one of the tongues 5. The other locking member l0 is then inserted in the slot and fills the remainder of the space ybetween the two tongues 5 and by forming these vdevices slightly wedge shaped the teeth of the member 1l will be forced tightly into engagement with the teeth of the tongue 5, thereby preventing the top member l lfrom becoming dis-engaged from the sleeve 4L until the locking member 10 is re..
plug or screw, not .shown may be threaded into the socket 12 thereby forming a holder for the hat or coat. The device is capable of a variety of uses and is adapted-to fit `either square or round tables, and can be placed either at the corners or midway the ends of a table.
' What I claim is .f Y v 1. A holderfor flexible sheets comprising upper and lower members adapted to lie parallel to each other when in normal position, means for connectingv said members,
one of said members having a longitudinally extending gu1de-way,sa1d guide-way being l.
provided with longitudinal slots, and a slidable locking member adapted to slide longitudinally in said guide-way or to pass transyCopies ofthis patentk may be obtained for versely across said guide-way through said slots. v.
2. lA holder ofthe kind described comprising a topmember having` an angled guideway at one end, and slotted in alinement with said guide-way, a lower vmember having tongues at right angles to said member, said tongues being `adapted toI enter said guide-way and means adapted to enter the 'y slot and engage said tongues for the purpose of locking said lower member and said top member together. n
3. A holder of the kind described compris- 1 ing a top member having an angled guideway at one end and slotted adjacent said guide-way, a lower member having' tongues 'at vright-angles thereto, said tongues entering said guide-way, one of vthe tongues be ing toothed upon its inner side, a toothed iloeking' member adaptedfto enter the slot and engage the toothed tongue and the second locking member adapted to fit between ing tongue.
