FIQE.
WRENCH.
Application filed May 24, 1912. Serial No. 899,461.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. STONE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cecilian, in the county of Hardin and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in wrenches, and more particularly to wrenches for use in removing and replacing the nuts on the axles of carriages, buggies and other vehicles.
My invention has for its object the provision of a wrench which when applied to the nut on the end of an axle and the hub of a wheel and the wheel is rotated in one direction will remove the nut and when revolved in the opposite direction will replace the nut.
t further has for its object the provision of a wrench which will remove and replace a nut on an axle without the necessity of handling the nut and soiling the hands.
It still further has for its object the provision of a wrench which is simple, durable, and inexpensive in construction and exceedingly easy and convenient to use.
My invention consists in the several features and combination of features as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a wheel with my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2, an edge view of the same; Fig. 3, a sectional view on the linem w of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a rear plan view of the wrench Fig. 5, a top edge view of the wrench; and Fig. 6 is a view of the wrench looking opposite to the line of view of Fig. 4:.
In the drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 represents the wheel of a vehicle, having a hub 2, 3 the axle on which said wheel is mounted, and 4t the wrench.
The wrench comprises a handle 5, having a series of recesses 6 in one end, preferably of different sizes, and the opposite end provided with an enlargement or head 7, having a socket 8 projecting therefrom adapted to be applied to or placed over a nut, and the outer end of the nut is designed to abut against the inner surface of the head, 7, and thereby securely retain the nut in said socket. A strap 9 is riveted or otherwise secured to the outer surface of the head 7 and is provided with curved resilient or spring arms 10, said arms being'for the purpose of retaining the wrench on the hub of a wheel and keeping the nut being oper ated upon securely in the socket 8, especially while the wheel is off.
In use the wheel of the vehicle is jacked up by any suitable jack and the wrench applied by inserting the spring-arms tightly over the hub of the wheel and the socket 8 over the nut until the outer end of the nut abuts against the head 7, and then revolving the wheel in one direction, when the wheel will unscrew the nut and can be removed, carrying the nut and wrench with it,
when the axle can be greased. To I'GPlitCu the nut it is only necessary to replace the wheel, which still carries the, nut and wrench, on the axle and revolve it in thu opposite direction, when the nut will be secured in place, after which the wrench can be removed. The cardinal or salient feature of the present invention resides in the combination of the peculiar hub gripping or clamping member, with the fiat head 7 having the rigid central nut socket 8 projecting from one face. It is to be noted that the strip 9 is secured over that face of the fiat head 7 opposite that face having the socket 8 projecting therefrom, and that the end portions of the strip 9 are formed in a peculiar manner. Thus, the strip is bent away from the head adjacent opposite edges thereof, and is then bent outwardly and around the said edges, as at 10. The strip is then bent inwardly beyond the respec tive edges from the portions 10 and toward the socket 8, to provide gripping fingers yieldable away from opposite sides of the socket. In this manner, the fingers may yield adjacent the head for grasping the end portions of various sized wheel hubs. If the nut is screwed very tightly on the axle it may in some cases be necessary to take hold of the handle of the wrench and loosen the nut before revolving the wheel.
I do not wish to limit the invention to the precise construction herein described and claimed, as the same may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention and the scope ofthe following claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A hub wrench embodying a flat head having a rigid central nut socket projecting 110 from one face and having a handle, and a strip secured over the other face of the head, the strip being bent away from the head adjacent opposite edges thereof, then outwardly and around the said edges, and thence inwardly beyond the said edges toward the said socket, to provide gripping fingers yieldable away from opposite sides of the socket, whereby the fingers may yield adwitnesses.
