UTNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. SAWI-IILL, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
DENTAL CLAMP.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. SAWHILL, a citizen of the United States,'residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Clamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to dental apparatus, and has for its principal object to-provide a device for retarding the flow of saliva in a patients mouth while adental operation is being performed, and more particularly to provide a clamp which may be easily and quickly applied to or removed from the mouth, and which, when in place, Will so cover the parotid or sublingual ducts as to retard the flow of saliva and thereby facilitate the dental operation,
In accomplishing this object I have provided certain improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is aperspective view of a clamp constructed according to my invention, showing its application to the duct from the parotid gland. Fig. II is a cross section of the clamp cups and side elevation of the spring. Fig. III is an elevation of a form of clamp more particularly adapted for use in connection with the sublingual duct, the clamp cups being in transverse section. Fig. IV is a plan view of the latter form of clamp illustrating the pivotal movement of the spring on the cup.
Referring more in detail to the parts 1 designates a spring upon which the clamp cups are carried, and which preferably comprises a central coil 2 for providing the resiliency and the arms 3 upon which the clamp cups 4 and 5 are mounted, the cup 5, which is adapted for application to the inside of the mouth, having its edges 6 turned back to form a smooth surface 7 Specification of Letters Patent.

which will not injure the mouth. The outer cup 5 may be concaved, as illustrated, although this construction is not important, as the cup or plate would be of suiiicient thickness to obviate injury to the 'patients mouth.
In the form particularly adapted for use in connection with the sublingual duct, I prefer to provide each of the clamp cups with a socket 8, and the ends of the clamp springs with balls 9 which are anchored within the sockets on the cups and are adapted to turn therein, so that the clamp spring may be projected from either side or from the front of the mouth so as not to interfere with the operator.
It is readily apparent that with the clamp the cup 5 will cover the duct and prevent the flowof saliva into the mouth, so that the work being done may be kept dry, and
that by having the inner cup concaved and provided with the back-turned edges, as illustrated, there is no tendency to injure the duct or the part of the mouth engaged by the cup.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is 2- 1. In a dental clamp, a carryin member comprising spring arms having ee outer ends, and facing cups having their backs secured to the spring arms and having beaded edges for the purpose set forth.
2. A dental clamp comprising a body member having arms, and cupped plates pivotally mounted on the free ends of said arms.
8. A dental clamp comprising plates, each having a socket thereon, and a body member provided with spring arms having balls on their free ends pivotally mounted in the sockets in said plates, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. SAWI-IILL.
