SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,956, dated December 10, 1889. Application filed June 26, 1889.. Serial No. 315,659- (No model.)-
To aZZ whom/it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. Soorr, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Casket-Fasteners, and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates generally to the class of fasteners or clamps for coffins or caskets, and especially to that class of fasteners which are adapted for use in clamping and screwing the lid of the metallic shell which fits within the coffin or casket proper; and my invention consists in the novel arrangement and construction of the fastener hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and readily operative fastener for this purpose.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a section of one wall of the casket, one wall of the metallic shell and a portion of its lid, showing the application of my fastener. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bracket D, showing its foot and clampingscrew.
A'is one of the walls of the usual wooden COffiIl or casket, inside of which is placed the metallic shell, one of the walls of which is here designated by B, said wall having at its upper end the inwardly-turned flange 1). Secured to the wall of the metallic shellis a bearingstrip O.
D is a bracket formed of abar with a bent top d, and with a foot cl, made, as shown in Fig. 2, in the shape of a quadrant or sector. This bracket passes freely through the flange b of the wall of the metallic shell, and its foot cl bears up under said flange, a rubber washer d intervening to make an air-tight joint. The bearing-strip O, which lies just under the bracket-foot, prevents the bracket from dropping down. Through the bent top (Z of the bracket passes the clamping-screw E, which may have an ordinary screw-head, as shown, or may have a thumb-head, as shown by the dotted lines.
On the flange b, and between its edge and the bracket D, is a rubber strip F.
G is the lid of the metallic shell.
In operation the bracket D is fitted to its seat from underneath, passing its curved end and its body through a suitable hole in the flange b. After it is in place the bearing-strip O is secured to the wall B of the metallic shell. The bracket D is fitted in its seat in such a manner that it may have a pivotal movement axially, and by reason of the quadrant or seetor shape of its foot d this movement is limited to a quarter-circle, for the reason that the straight sides of its foot come in contact on one side or the other with the Wall B, so as to prevent the bracket from moving farther than through about ninety degrees. This movement of the bracket is sufficient to carry its bent end (I, and the clamping-screw E, which is seated in it, away from the lid G, so as to release said lid and tocarry the screw back again over the lid, so that when set down it will press the lid-edge down upon the rub.- ber strip F and form an air-tight joint. In this manner the lid G may be readily secured in place and may be as easily; removed when required.

Having thus described my invention, vs hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A fastener for the shells of caskets, consist in g of the axially-movable bracket adapted to be seated in the casket-shell top, and having a quadrant or sector shaped foot, and a clampingscrew, whereby the shell-lid is clamped, substantially as described.
2. The fastener for the metallic shells of caskets, consisting of the axially-movable bracket seated in the casket-shell top, having a bent upper end and a quadrant or sectorfoot, whereby its axial movement is limited, as described, and the clamping-screw seated in said upper end, whereby the casket-shell lid is clamped and relieved, substantially as described.
3.
