HOD-STAND.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD CARROLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hod-Stands, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to stands designed to be used as a support for a hod, and its object is to provide a simple and handy support on which the hod may be hung to await removal. This object is attained by means of a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the stand. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the upper portion of the stand, partly in section, showing the hod in place thereon, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.

Referring specifically to the drawing 5 denotes an upright standard supported by legs 6 which are formedintegral with the bottom portion of the standard, and are spread to provide a firm support. The legs are provided with base plates or feet 7.

At the upper end of the standard 5 is a fork, the two branches of which are inclicated at 8, the same pointing upward and diverging. Substantially midway between the top and bottom of the standard 5, the latter has a side lug 9 the outer end of which has a vertical slot 10. substantially semicircular in cross section. The slot is spaced a short distance from the standard pro-per. The fork branches 8 have a slight outward taper when seen from the side and they are enlarged at the base toward that side of the standard which has the lug 9, as shown in Fig. 2. The slot is in the same vertical plane as the space between the fork branches, so that the hod handle may be placed in said slot as will presently be described.

The standard 5 is tubular except at its upper end where it is solid.

In use, the hod 11 is placed between the fork branches 8, with the handle 12 extending downward and seating in the slot 10. The hod may be supported in this manner to await its removal. The enlargement at the base of the fork branches and the spac ing of the slot from the standard, spaces the handle 12 of the hod from the latter. The hod handle may therefore be readily grasped to remove the hod from the stand. as there is suflicient space between the standard and the hod handle to allow the hand to come therebetween and grasp the handle.

I claim:

1. A supporting stand comprising an up right standard having supporting legs at the bottom, and provided at the top with diverging fork branches, said standard having below the fork branches a lug extending in the direction of the length of the standard, and said lug having a vertical slot throughout its entire length, said slot lying in the same vertical plane as the space between the fork branches, and being spaced from the side of the standard.

2. A supporting stand comprising an upright standard having supporting legs, and provided at the top with diverging fork branches, and said standard having below the fork branches a lug provided with a vertical slot which is in the same vertical plane as the space between the fork branches, said slot being spaced from the side of the standard, and the fork branches being enlarged at the base toward that side of the standard on which the lug is located.
