VALVE-GEINDING TOOL'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 23, 19kt. 1914. Serial No. 818,3k6.
T0 alt to/tom it may concern Be it known that We, JOHN H. SIEGLE, Jr., and @MER H. ANDREWS, citizens of the United States, residing at Amsterdam, county of Montgomery, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Valve-Grinding Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The. invention relates to such improvements and consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed. I
Reference may be had to the accompany. ing drawings and the reference characters marked thereon, which form apart of this specification. l
Similar characters refer to in the several figures therein.
Figure l ot' the drawing is a view in central longitudinal section ot' our improved valve-grinding tool applied to a valve of a gas-engine. l41 ig. 2 is a view in perspective of the body of the tool and a portion of the swi'veled shank. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the end of the shank which makes universal swiveled connection with the body similar parts The principal objectI of the invention is to facilitate grinding inaccessibly located Yalves of gas-engines and the like, without removing the valves..
Referring to the drawing wherein the invention is shown in its preferred form. l. represents a conica! puppet-valve applied to a seat, 2. such as is commonly found in internal combustion engines of automobiles and the like. The valve is provided in its upper side with lary-openings. El, adapted to be engaged by asmtable tool whereby the valve body can he rotated upon its seat to renew and perfect the surfaces ot contact between the valve and the seat.
Our improved tool coml'n'ises` a body` l, having lugs, 5, adapted to engage the openings, 3, in the valve` and a shank or spindle, G. having a universal swiveled connection with the body, 4. The body, 4, isprovided with a central rectangular opening. 7, in its outer side adapted to receive a head, 8, on
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents lar walls of the opening. i'.
the'end of the shank or spindle, t3, which head is of spherical form tiattened on four sides, whereby is adapted to engage the rectangular opening, T, in various angular positions of the stem rotatively to the axis of the body. l. The head, S. is loosely con fined within the opening, T. by means of a plate, 9, secnredto the body.- l., by screws, l0, and provided with a central aperture, ll, smaller than the head, 8, and larger than the stem, G, permitting the stem. ti, to be rocked in difi'erent directionsl while retaining` the head, S, within the openings, lT, and in operative engagement with the rectangle stem, G, may be provided with :unv desired form of operating handle. the stem .in the preferred having' the hand-rest, 12, a
form ot a brace nd a crank-hair dle.-l3, formed by a bend in the ste-n1 or crank', (l.
in using the device. the body, l. of the tool is engaged with the valve, l, the stem. (3, projecting from the body at whatever angle is found convenient, and the toot is then rotated by-meansl ot' the crank-handle, 13. causing the valve to he rotated ipon its seat until. the'surt'acesl of the valve and seat are dressed to the desired degree- 'hat we claim as 'new and desire by Letters Patent is- A valwgrimling tool comprising a body having ou one end means whelclrv itI is adapted to engage a valve and provided in itsv other end with an angular' opening; and an operating stem having a head snhstan ti'ally in the form ot a sides engageable with said opening. .said body having means where-hy said head is loosely confined within .said opening with 'freedom i'or lsubstantially universal swiveled movement ot .the stem.
'in testimony whereof. we have hereunto to secure set our hands this 29u. day ol'v April, 19t-t.;
