To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY B. MATHEWS, citizen of the United States, residing at Ansonia, in the county of Darke and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bill-Files, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in bill files.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a bill file on which statement sheets may be placed and which will permit of any of the sheets being removed without disarranging the remaining Sheets.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be placed within a suitable binding and used in the same manner as a loose leaf binder.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a construction in which it is not necessary to move or adjust the sheet retaining means in the removal of a sheet or the placing of a sheet thereon.

For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device mounted upon a supporting board; Fig. 2 is a section taken transversely through the retaining clip and support; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the device arranged within a cover or back.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the Same reference characters.

The invention broadly contemplates the provision of a sheet retaining means which may be used with the usual binding or which may be placed on a stand or support.

In Fig. 2 of the drawing, the device is illustrated as supported within a binding 11. The retaining means consists of a strip or block 12 disposed transversely of the leaf 13 ofthe cover or binding 11. This strip or block may be secured to the binding in any suitable manner, and may be formed of any material, being, however, preferably constructed of wood and provided at its upper edge with a rounded surface 14. A U-shaped clip 15 embraces the strip intermediate its ends, its base portion 16 being secured to the section 13 of the cover. The sheet may then be placed upon either of the leaves of the cover. It will thus be seen that when a plurality of leaves are placed on the clip, and it is desired to examine any one of said leaves, they may he slipped over the clip from one leaf of the cover to the other until the sheet, which it is desired to remove, is placed adjacent the diagonal passage 22, where it may be conveniently taken from the clip.

The many advantages of a construction of this character will be clearly apparent, as it will be noted that the statement sheets or leaves may be conveniently placed in a binder and maintained against displacement, and that they may be removed in a simple manner. It will also be seen that the structure may be easily and economically manufactured, and that there are no removable parts which must be adjusted in the placing of the leaves in the hinder or in their removal.

\Vhat I claim is 1. A bill file including a base member, an elongated block extending centrally thereof, and a substantially U-shaped member embracing the block and secured to the base member, the sides of the member being spaced from the block, the terminals of the member being bent toward each other and disposed in spaced relation to each other and above the upper edge of the block, said terminals being cut obliquely to form a diagonal passage.

2. A bill file including a base member, an elongated block extending centrally thereof, and a substantially U-shaped retaining member having its lower portion inserted between the block and the base member and secured to the base member, the upper terminals of the retaining member being bent toward each other and disposed above the block and cut obliquely, said oblique terminals being spaced to form a diagonal passage whereby the sheets may be applied to the retaining member and disposed to lie on the base member at either side of the block.

3. A bill file including a base member having a recess formed in its upper face, an elongated block mounted on the base and disposed to extend across the central portion of the recess, and a substantially U-shaped retaining member having its bight portion seated in the recess and secured to the base member, the sides of the retaining member extending upwardly and in spaced relation to the sides of the'block.

4. A bill file including a base member having a recess formed in its, upper face, an

elongated block member mounted on the base and disposed to extend across the central portion of the recess, a substantially U- shaped retaining member having its body portion secured in the recess, the sides of the retaining member extending upwardly in spaced relation to the block member, the upper terminals of the sides being bent inwardly toward each other and disposed in spaced relation to each other above the upper edge of the block.
