Description

D.A.DALY. STAIR CONSTRUCTION. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 5, 1913.
Patented June 23,1914.
DANIEL A. DALY, or Naw Yoan, raopnors co., or NEW Yon-K, N.
N. Y., ASSIGNDB IO UNITED STATES METAL Y., A CORTORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
STATE CONSTRUCTION.
Specication ofLetters Patent. 4Patented June 23 19.14.
iApplication tiled, March 5, 1913. Serial No, 752,248,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIELl A. DALY, a` citizen of the United States, and' a resident of the borough of Brooklyn', city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stair Construction, of which the'followin is a specification. This invention re ates to improvements in stair construction.
By the use of my invention I produce an exceedingly simple and Ainexpensive construction whereby an effective non-slipping tread is provided which is an integral part of the structure and a sanitary cove is formed between a tread of suitable filling material and a metallic riser;
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a section of a stair embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a planview of a stair tread embodying my invention.
In the preferred embodiment. of myy invention I provide a series of sections each formed of a single sheet of metal, each section comprising a supporting tread, a riser having an outwardly bent portion contiguous to the supporting tread and adapted to provide a sanitary cove between the riser and a suitable filling material, and a level indicator for such material, a nosing, a nonslipping tread ated metal having staggered ridges formed y cutting suitable apertures in said metal, said tread portion rojecting inwardly `from the nosing, spaced om the supporting tread of the preceding section and having a bearin ange contacting therewith and a suitab e filling material filling the space between the non-slipping trea portion and the supporting tread. i
Referring now-to these drawings 1 designates a section of stair construction formed of a single sheet of metal and comprising a supporting tread 2 which may have a flange at the lateral end thereof, riser 3, nosing 11, and a metallic non-slipping tread portion 5 projecting'inwardly from the nosing and overhanging the supporting tread of the preceding section, and having a bearing contact therewith by means of a flan e 6. As shown, the supporting tread o one section bears upon a ortion pomposed of corrusuitably spaced therefrom horizontal web portion 7 formed betweei l therser 3 and nosing 4 of the succeeding section. e i ,f v'lhe overhaugin nonslipp-n ,tread p01- tion -5 is preferab y formed o corrugated metaythe ridges 8 of which are staggeredin re'l'atln to each other by having portions of alternate ridges cut away as at 8", and these staggered ridges form, when so embedded in a suitable filling material 9 that the tops of 'such ridges will be flush with such material, a very eicient non-slipping tread. This filling material may be cement, lead, cariborundum, or other suitable tread materia The riser 3, as illustrated, is provided contiguous to the supporting tread with an outwardly bent portion 10 which forms with the filling material thus preventingthe collectionof dust, etc., at this po1nt, and the apex of such outwardly extending cove-forming portion pro-y vides an indicator to permit the workmento bring the filling material to the proper level.
It will be obvious that when the space between the supporting tread, metallic nonslipping tread portion and cove-portion is filled with cement, lead, carborundu'm, or other suitable material, an extremely inexpensive non-slipping tread construction will be provided, which non-slipping tread will be an integral portion of the stair construction, and, furthermore, the forming froma single sheet ofnietal stair sections embody-v ing a, supporting-tread, riser, nosing and 9 a sanitary 'cove 11 be- ,I 1 tween such riser and the filling material 9,'
non-slipping tread portion, will greatly reduce the cost of manufacture of the construction.
Having described my invention, I claim?.
1. In stair construction, a section formed of a single sheet of metal, comprisin a supporting tread, a riser, a nosing an a nonslipping tread portion projecting inwardly from the nosing.
2. In stair construction,l a section formed of a single sheet of metal comprising a supporting tread, a riser, a nosing and a nonslippin tread portion projecting inwardly from t e nosing and formed of corrugated metal having staggered ridges.
3. In stair construction, a metallic supporting tread formed on one section, a nosing and tion integrally formed on another section,I
a metallic non-slipping tread por- A the non-slipping tread portion being spaced from the said supporting tread and vided with apertures, anda suitable iilling material filling the space between the supporting tread and non-slipping tread p0rtion and embedding the major portion of the latter.
` 4. In stair construction, a section formed of a single sheet of metal comprising a. supporting tread, 4aJ flange along the lateral edge of said tread, a riser, non-slipping tread portion wardly rom the nosmg.
5. In stair construction, a. section formed a nosing, and a. projectingV 1nof a single sheet of metal comprising a supportin tread, a flange along the lateral edge of sai tread, a. riser, a nosing, 'and a nonslippin tread portion projecting inwardly from tEe nosing and formed of corrugated metal having staggered ridges.
In witness whereof, I have signed my name to the foregoing specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
DANIEL A. DALY.
