material, the said two half-wheels having flanges turned up at right angles fr0m the plane and the edges of said flanges 0f che tw0 halves being j0inted to each other t0 f0rm a h0llow circular b0x 0r casing which serves as a wheel for t0ys 01' as a sheave 01 drum 0r r0ller t0 beemployed in the 0011- struction 0f toys, particularly 0f mechanical toys.
The purp0se 0f this invention is t0 provide a wheel 01 the like 0f this kind, the two halves 0f which have a firm hold upon each 0ther and a1e not liable to be deformed 01 destroyed in use, as other toy-wheels very frequently used t0 be. The periphery 0f the wheel, er drum 0r roller, according t0 this invention, has n0 projecting portions but presents an even rolling surface enabling the toy t0 run smoothly and without objec tionable friction up0n the floor, er table 01 any surirace upon which the toy :is being placed.
The manufacture 0f toy-wheels according t0 this invention is very cheap and requires n0 soldering, riveting 01 welding, the joint between the tw0 halves 01 the wheel being 0btained by tongues 01' lugs projecting fr0m the edge 0f 0ne half and engaging slits 0r recesses in the other half, which tongnes 0r lugs, when engaged in ehe slits 01' recesses 0f the opposite half, are bent t0 firmly hold 0ne half 0f the wheel against the opposite half.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section through a toy wheel constructed according t0 this invention, the section line being taken on line AA. of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the toy-wheel, seen fro1n the left toward the right 0f Fig. l. Fig. 2 is a section through the wheel taken 0n line BB 0f Fig. 2. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the two halves 0f the wheel before they are j ointed t0 each ot-her. Fig. 4 is a side-view 0f 0ne 0f the halves of the wheel. Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 serve t0 illustrate a modification 0f this invencion, Fig. 5 being a central vertical section through the wheel 0n line DD of Fig. 6; Fig. 8 being a section' 011 line EE 0f Fig. 6. Fig. 7 is a similar section 0n line DD of Fig. 6 and showing a modification 0f the same.
Referring t0 Figs. l, 2, and 2*, a, and b,
are the tvv0 halves 0f the wheel, stamped fr0m sheet-1netal 01 other ductile material; a central hole c, may be punched into said halves t0 receive the wheel-axle, and an annular recess d, may also be pressed into the met-al 01: the said halves, but neither the central hole, n0r the recess (Zv is essential nor forms part of this invention. Both of the halfwheels a, Z), have flanges e, f, turned up at right angles to the plane 0f the wheel, and the said flanges, when laid against each other, as fu1ly shown in Figs. 2, and 2 are flush with each 0ther and form a plane and even periphery 0f the wheel. T0 join the two halves a, and b, to each 0ther, 0110 of said halves, say b, has tongues 01' lugs g, projecting fr0m t-he edge of ics flange f, and in the other half, a, corresponding slits h, are provided, through which the said tongues 0r lugs g are made t0 pass and project. The projecting ends of said tongues 01' lugs, then being bent d0wn t0 the surface 0f the Wheel, the two halves are firmly engaged to each other, without soldering 01 riveting 0r other 1neans. The tongues 0r lugs g are n0t projecting in the plane 0f the flange f, but are set ofl: t0 forma a shoulder z, as shown in Fig. l, against which the edge 0f the flange 0 o-f the 0ther half a will rest; the said tongues 01 lugs g, therefore, provide an additional strength t0 the circumference 0f the wheel.
lVhile, aceording t0 Figs. l, 2, and 2, the two halves a, and b, 0f the wheel are not equal to each other, one carrying the lugs 0r tongues g, and the other being provided with an equal number 0f slits h, the said halves, according t0 Figs. 3 and 4', are sli'ghtly modified in that eaeh 0f the two half-'wheels a, and b, have projecting tongues 01' lugs g, and each 01: them is provided with corresponding slits, h, whereby the two halves are mutually engaging each other and the bent ends 0f the said tongues er lugs project from either side 0f the wheel.

According to Figs. 5, and 8, only 0ne of the two halves a, and b, has tongues or lugs g, formed to the edge 0f its flange, and the said tongues 01 lugs overlap the outside periphery 0f the counterhalf wheel.
Fig. 7 illustrates another modifioation, acco1ding to which both half-wheels a, and b, have tongues g formecl on the eclge 0f their flange. In th'1s case, ehe said tongues projecting from the edge 0f the half-wheel b are adapted to overlap the periphery 0f the half-wheel a and to engage its recesses j, while the tongues 01' lugs g 0f the other half-wheel a extend in a straight line t0 01 nearly t0 the bottom 0f the count-er-half wheel b. The inside-tongues of the halfwheel a, in this case, serve as a counter-support of tl1e other half-wheel Z), adaptecl t0 strengthen the Whole structure, even if the recesses (l, in the sides of th e wheel are 11013 provided. for.

It Will be notecl that in all 01 the forms shown and clescribecl the tongues extencling from the lateral flange 0f one 0f t-ll halfwheels engage receiving seats 011 the opposite half-wheel, which receiving seats do 110t extencl bey0ncl the periphery 0f the halfwheel. Thereby, when the parts are assemblecl and fastenecl ehe tongues Will in no case f01n1 a projection extending beyoncl ehe periphery of the half-Wheel, so that a smooth wheel periphery is formed, wl1ether t-he receiving seats be in the form of slits h as in Figs. 1 t0 4: o1 in the form of' peripheral recesses as in the remaining figures.
I clairn as my invention:
l. In a wheel, a half-wheel comprising a forn1eclon the sa1ne, saicl flange being providecl with tongues extencling beyond the same, in combination with a seconcl opposite half-wheel also oomprising a disk-portion ancl an upturned annular flange and provicled with peripheral recesses in the fiange, the tongues 0n the first half-wheel engaging tl1e recesses on the second halfwheel.
8. A toy-wheel comprising two halfwheels 0f equal cliameter, each half-wheel' having a circular upturnecl fiange coacting Wih ehe fiange of the opposite half-wheel to form tl1e periphery of the wheel, tongues f0rmecl 011 the eclge of the fiange of at least one 0f the two half-wheels, recesses formed in at least 0110 of the t-wo half-wheels, said recesses being adapted t0 be engaged by the saicl tongues 0f the opposite half-wheel, and a bent end formecl t0 the encl 0f saicl engaging tongues, 130 hold the two halfwheels against each otl1er, substantially as a11cl f01' the purpose set forth.

A toy-wheel comp1*ising two halfwheels 0f equal cliameter, each half-wheel having an upturnecl fiange coacting with the fiange of the other halfwheel t0 consti- 'tute the periphery 0f the wheel, recesses formecl across the fiange 0f ab least 0110 0f the two halfwheels tongues projecting from tl1e fiange of ab least 0110 of the two half-wheels, saicl tongues being adaptecl to engage and fill the said recesses in tl1e flange of the opposite half-wheel, ancl a bent portion formecl 011 the encl of' said tongues, t0 hold tl1e two half-wheels against eaoh other, substantially as and :Eor the purpose set forth.
