UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM ROSENGARTEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BUCKLE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ABRAHAM Rosana-m- TEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to buckles and has particular reference to a type 0. buckle wherein a rigid frame, such as metal, is designed to receive an inserted member, such as an ornamental leather finishing piece or facing.
It has heretofore been proposed to force an ornamental leather insert member into a channel shaped metallic frame, but difficulty has been experienced in getting a smoothly finished article, and in securely maintaining the inserted leather in position in the metal frame.
My invention is concerned mainly with the feature of the leather insert in such buckles, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a structure wherein the leather or other ornamental insert will be firmly retained in position, and the finished article will have and maintain a smooth and. artistic appearance.
The invention, in its preferred form, is ilustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a front elevational view, parts being broken away, of a complete buckle according to my invention; Fig. 2 is an elevational view of a securing or wedge member for retaining the ornamental leather facing in the metal frame; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the blank which forms the facing; and Fig. 1 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 1% of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
The buckle shown in the drawing is of substantially oblong configuration, but it will be understood that this form is not es sential and has been chosen for illustrative purposes merely.
My improved buckle comprises three essential parts, viz :a channel frame 10 of suitable material such as metal; a securing or wedge member 11, preferably of hard rubber or indurated fiber; and, a facing 12 of leather, cloth, or any other appropriate Specification of Letters Patent.

material, which may or may not be ornamented, as desired. It will be noted that the wedge 11 and the facing member 12 conform, substantially, in shape to the shape of the channel in the frame 10. The frame which has been designated generally by the numeral 10, is preferably stamped up from any desired metal, and comprises the parallel inner and outer walls 10 and 10 and the base wall 10. At the base of the buckle, and intermediate its ends, the walls 10 and 10 are interrupted at 10 leaving nothing but the base wall 10 at this point, to receive the loop 13 of a tongue 14: which is thus pivotally mounted, and which is sufliciently long to reach to the opposite part of the buckle. At each side of the cut out portion 10 in the outer wall 10 and preferably intcgral with this wall, is a prong or pin 15, capable of being bent over to assist in retaining the facing 12 in position. At the upper intermediate portion of the wall 10 a similar prong 15 is provided, the function of which is like that of the other prongs. The relative dimensions of the wedge 11 and facing 12 are such that the facing may be laid over the wedge with its side edges 12 bent over and lying against the lateral walls of the wedge. WVhen the facing 12 has been properly placed over or on the wedge 11, these two members are forced into the channel in the frame 10, and the prongs 15 are bent at right angles to the plane of the walls 10 and 10 The wedge and facing are thus smoothly and firmly held in position. Thereafter the tongue 14 is attached in a well known manner, and the buckle is complete.
It will be understood that the thickness or diameter of the wedge 11 is such that when covered by the facing 12 these two members will fit tightly in the channel between the walls 10" and 10 and that prongs 15 serve as a precautionary measure against displacement or withdrawal of the wedge and facing.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A buckle, comprising a channel frame having a portion of its lateral walls cut away at one point to provide a reduced bearing portion, a tongue having a loop member embracing said bearing portion and freely revoluble about the same, a Wedge in said In testimony whereof I have afiixed my channel, a flexible covering over said Wedge signature in presence of two Witnesses. having its side edges held between said ABRAHAM ROSENGARTEN. Wedge and the lateral Walls of the channel itnesscs:
