This invention relates to a lid or cover locking device for a box and has for its ob` ject the production of a lock that can be applied to any box or cover.
Another object ot this invention is the production of a lid or cover locking device which cannot become detached from the box or cover, in other words having all4 the locking members always intact.
lVith these and other objects in View', this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as .will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In thefaccompanyingdrawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a box and cover with the improved locking means mounted thereon. Fig. 2 is an end view of a box with a locking means mounted thereon. Fig. 3 isaview of the opposite end of the box ing means mounted thereon. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section of the bracing cleat of the box, showingr the locking hasp and connecting link. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section of one end of the box with the cover removed. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of an end of the box with the locking device mounted thereon. Fig. 7 is a perspective View of the opposite end of the box as is shown in Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the locking plate used with this device. Fig. 9 is a perspective view noffxthe connecting link.
Referring to the accompanying drawingr by numerals7 the box 1() is provided with from that of Fig. 2, with the improved lock-l` the ordinary lid or cover 11 which has downvvardly projecting {ianges 12 at allits edges, said downwardly projecting flanges v12 having an opening formed at 13. Mounted on the rear 'end of the box is a plate 14 which is provided With a laterally extendin foot 15 which is adapted to pass through t e open; ing 13 in the downwardly projectin iange 12 of the cover 11. A. bracing cleat 1 is pro- "upper end. Extending through this reduced neck 1S and into the pocket 17 is one end ,20 of a substantially U-shaped locking latch 19. said locking latch 1'9 having mounted on 'its Iend 20 a collar 21 abutting against the lower face vof which is a coiled spring 22- which also abuts against a secondary collar 23.v at a ,position lower than that of the collar 211 Threaded on the end of the portion 20 of the locking hasp 19 is a nut 24 which is adapted to be used as means to adjust or regulate the tension of the spring 22. The other end 25 of the locking hasp 19 is positioned within the auxiliary pocket 26 formed in the upper face of the bracing stay 19 adjacent the reduced portie-n 18 of the pocket 17. A connectinglink 27 provided with an engaging loop 28 at one end and a depending portion 29 through whichan opening 30 is formed. is connected to the substantially U- shaped locking hasp by means of lsaid opening 30. Connected to the under face of the cover 11 on the opposite end from which the aperture 13 is formed, is a plate 31 that extends beyond the end of the cover and box and is provided with an upwardly extending lug 32 and an aperture 34. The space between'the end of the cover 11 and the inner face of the upturned lug 32 is of the same width as the width of the connecting link 27 and is adapted to receive the connecting link 27 when the box is in a locked position. The opening 34. formed in the plate 31 registers with an opening 33 formed in the engaging loop 28 of the connecting link 27 through which a seal is adapted to be placed.
It will' be seen from the foregoing description that when the lid or cover of the box is to be locked, the laterally extending foot 15 is placed in the opening 13 in one end of the coverr or lid,y and the connecting link 19 is brought up over the upwardly extending lug 32 and into the pocket formed 'by the endof the cover and the lug 32 and isthereby securely held by means of the spring 22 and by the seal.
[t is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof. It is therefore not wished to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown' and described, but it isfwished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
What is claimed is: 1. A locking device comprising a substantially U-shaped locking hasp, said locking hasp comprising substantially long and short members extending parallel tc each other, col-` lars mounted on said long extension of said locking hasp, a spring positioned between said collars, a nut threaded u on the end of said member of greater lengt whereby the tension of said spring may be regulated, a connecting link carried by said locking hasp and provided with an engaging loop at its end, a locking plate provided with an upwardly turned lug at its end to provide a pocket for receiving said loo enga 'ng member of said connecting lin a sea 'ng means passin'through Vsaid plate and said connecting 1in wherebysaid plate and said connecting link may be held .securely together.
2. A'locking device comprising a support, a plate adapted to be secured to the top of a box and extend beyond the edge thereof, an upwardly extending flange at the end of said plate, a substantially U-shaped hasp in said support, and a connecting link carried by said hasp adapted to be placed on said plate between4 the edge of the top of a' box and said flange.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my signature in presence of two witnesses. i
