TIRE TRUNK.

JOSEPH BERG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TIRE-TRUNK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 16, 1914.
Application filed September 7, 1912. Serial No. 719,073.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tire Trunks, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are to provide tire trunks suitable to be fastened upon automobiles and for mounting tires, as is usual, but having their mouths so located that when they are opened the contents will not fall out, having lids which can be quickly and easily opened or closed and which will make reliably weather tight joints; and free from projections which might tear peoples clothes and be otherwise objectionable.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front eleva tion; Fig. 2 a transverse section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 an enlarged fragmentary section showing the trunk mouth and lid closed, and the lock; Fig. at a fragmentary section parallel with the face of the trunk, illustrating the layout joint between the lid and trunk mouth; Fig. 5 a fragmentary elevation of the projecting mouth-stump and a bayonet layout joint slot therein; and Fig. 6 a more enlarged section like Fig. 3, but not showing the lock.
In general terms my improved tire trunk is a smooth hollow cylinder having its mouth located eccentrically adjacent to the tube in one head, a flanged mouth-stump riveted inside of, making a tight joint with and projecting outwardly from the head, and a tubular lid making a bayonet joint with the mouth stump and a weather-tight oint with the head adjacent thereto, and secured from backing off by a hasp lock.
In the form illustrated, I provide a tubular case 1 preferably of metal, with smoothly rounded corners and closed by heads, in one of which, 7, I provide, located as eccentrically as practicable, a circular mouth 6. To enable me to make a tight joint between the flexible head 7 and the lid 5, I provide a substantial, stifl bead, 14, on the head about the mouth 6; and a flanged tubular mouth stump 8 whose flange lies against the inward face of the head 7, is larger in diameter than the bead 14, and is riveted, outwardly thereof, by rivets 9 to said head. The outward portion 10 of said stump is preferably reduced in diameter; and it contains bayonet-joint slots 11.
The lid 5 is tubular and its tubular portion terminates in a stiffening bead 18, cor responding and adapted to make a good joint with the bead 141 on the head 7; and fixed in the tubular portion of said lid are inwardlyradially extending pins, 16, corresponding and adapted to coact with the slots 11 in the mouth stump 8, in a bayonet joint made by placing the lid 5 upon the stump 8 with the pins 16 entered into the slots 11, slightly rotating the lid and thereby causing the bayonet joint to draw the lid home and the beads 13 and 14 into close con tact, making a weather tight joint, which is rendered practicable and cheap by the stiffness and smooth surfaces of said beads. It will be observed that the mouth stump 8 projects beyond the beads 13 and 14 and can act as a weather break to the joint.
To look the lid and prevent its shaking loose or unauthorized removal, I hinge to the trunk head 7 a bent-has trunk-lock 23 of common type, whose case is housed (when locked) in a recess 22 formed in the disk 12 of the lid 5 and whose bolt enters and engages a slot formed therein; The lock forms no part of my invention; but the mode of housing its case in the recess 22 enables me to avoid outstanding members; which are objectionable and dangerous in appliances for vehicle use.
On the lid 5 I provide diametrically opposite outstanding pins 2d and 25, to which a spanner or hammer can be applied to tighten or start the lid.
When in use the trunk is suitably secured to a vehicle with its mouth outward and' above its axis so that when opened the contents will not fall out; it is free from dangerous projections, and tires 3, 4, can be mounted on it.
I claim:
1. In a drum-shaped tire trunk, a tubular body, heads, one of said heads having an eccentrically-located mouth adjacent to said body and an integral stiffening member formed about said mouth; secured in and outstanding from said mouth a tubular mouth-stump formed with marginal bayonet-lock slots; a tubular lid and inwardly projecting pins on said lid, adapted to form with said slots a bayonet joint.
2. In a drum-shaped tire trunk, a tubular body, heads, one of said heads having an eccentrioally located mouth adjacent to said body and an integral stifi'ening member formed about said mouth; secured in and outstanding from said mouth a flanged tubular mouth-stump having its flange Within the trunk and riveted to said head out- Wardly from said stiffening member and formed with marginal bayonet-lock slots; a tubular lid and inwardly-projecting pins on said lid, adapted to form With said slots a bayonet joint.
3. In a drum-shaped tire trunk the combination of a tube, a bottom, and a head con taining an eccentrically located mouth adjacent to the trunk tube, an integral stiffening bead 011 the head about said mouth, a flanged outstanding mouth-stump having marginal bayonet-lock slots and riveted 111 said mouth With its flange Within the trunk 20 Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
